Rangers interested in ex-Penguin

The Rangers, we're told, are among a select number of teams interested in former Penguins defenseman Josef Melichar, who played this season in the Swedish Elite League. A physical-oriented defenseman who will turn 30 in January, Melichar probably can be signed for approximately $1M. So, are the Blueshirts better off with a combined $6M investment in Michal Rozsival and projected third-pair defenseman Melichar, or with a combined $6.5-7M investment in Brooks Orpik and, say, impending Montreal free agent Mark Streit, who would play on the third pair and on the vacated power-play point?

Let them waste money on Melichar.

If they can get Streit and Orpik that would be the way to go, I'd rather spend the extra cash on a couple of guys who were actually in the league last year and had decent seasons rather than a guy that played in the Swedish Elte League. Not taking anything away from the SEL but it's not the NHL.

Detroit seems to have done alright with their picks from the swedish elite league.

How many 30 year olds have they got from the SEL.

Um...the point of the article is that if they were to go for Melichar as the low-cost option to more expensive defensemen, while he is basically AS talented as anyone they can get - and then sign a more dynamic offensive player or retain Rozsival- the Rangers would be better off. Its not a waste of money at $1 million. You should read the article.

What's up with the Rangers going after so many former Penguins? Rozsival is a former Pen, Melichar is too. Add in Jagr and Straka. Then the article talks about the Rangers looking at Orpik and Hossa.

1 million? LOL hardly a waste. Hater.

June 9, 2008  10:46 AM ET

Let's see, he wasn't good enough to stay on the Pens. He wasn't good enough to be in the NHL last season. But now he is being talked about like he is some suprise bargin that is going to put the team in a better cap position. 1Mil is more than he is worth. So I repeat my statement, Let the Penguins rejects... I mean Rangers waste their money on him.

Jagr also played for the Caps. And Straka was on the Devils for a good while. Melichar now plays in Sweden. Mark Streit wasn't a Pen but he's on the Canadians. I think you're on to something! IDK what though...

Penguin rejects LOL. You're just bitter you thought the Pensys actually had a chance at winning the Cup. Let the crying divers overpay Malkin or Hossa this was their best chance to win the Cup and they blew it. Even with the refs blowing their whistles giving them powerplays every period.

June 9, 2008  11:21 AM ET

Brooks Orpik we know but, Joseph .... who?

June 9, 2008  11:33 AM ET

LOL, how does making a comment about a former Pens player make me Bitter? I'm not bitter that they lost, they got out coached and were out played. They will be back. Perhaps it is you that is bitter, going on the offensive anyone says anything remotely negative about your precious Rangers.

OtherOne...are you still on the diving thing?

June 9, 2008  12:10 PM ET

Sorry Durk it isn't you. I have too many people around me who claim to be Pens fans (when I know more about their team than the do) knowing very little or nothing of hockey and think it's clever to call the Rangers "Penguins rejects."

They seem to not understand that players don't stick to their teams for their entire careers out of goodwill. Or free agency.
