Yankees eye future rotation

The Yankees are trapped between objectives. They are the $200 million-plus team that is playing for tomorrow. To win now, they must address their (plural) weaknesses. Though not obtaining Johan Santana continues to hover over the organization, the Yanks do not view the rotation as a major priority. Sure, they would love to add an ace. But the best starters that could be available - Cleveland's C.C. Sabathia, Milwaukee's Ben Sheets and Toronto's A.J. Burnett - are in their walk years. The Yanks will not give up big prospects for a rental (nor should they), and the health risks on all three are too great to do a trade-and-sign. And rather than use assets on a middle-rung type (think Cincinnati's Bronson Arroyo or Detroit's Nate Robertson), the Yanks will instead hope that Mike Mussina and Darrell Rasner keep on keeping on, that Andy Pettitte and Chien-Ming Wang get their acts together, that Joba Chamberlain transitions well to the rotation, and that Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy get healthy and straightened out to provide depth.

I pity fools, but not rich fools like the Steinbrenners and their team. The Yankees had their chance at Santana and passed, and we'll see if it bites them in the ass. But let's get this straight; they ain't gonna make the playoffs this year. Next year, with C.C. Sabathia in their rotation and Mark Teixiera at first, they'll be better.

And I'd still like to ram my fist across every Yankee's coconut head.

June 8, 2008  11:01 PM ET

That is their pitching staff, not very consistent right now. But Mussina has 9 wins, pettitte is a second half pitcher, rasner is in fact eating up innings, with little run support, Joba is developing, and the other kids are either injured or developing in the minors, as a possibility, one of them maybe trade bait for another starter, if available in July or before. There are a couple more in the minors who may be available in the second half. Yes, they may be interested in a big name free agent, but like the "little boss" said, Girardi is not under pressure to win in his first full year. we shall see...

yeah CC would be a nice pickup..can Sheets and Burnett stay healthy?? Big Tex would be a great addition at first if he doesn't decide to play for Baltimore..

June 9, 2008  06:26 AM ET

C.C. may seem like a good fit but he has an absolutely atrocious record at yankee stadium + his unstable personality will most certainly not be able to handle the pressure of being in NY. picking up another aging mediocre guy would be a waste of resources. best option is to hold out or trade for someone legit. Considering that the lineup is just recently healthy and clicking, we'll know if its worth a run within a few weeks

June 9, 2008  07:04 AM ET

They just won 2 games where their pitchers gave up 6 and 11 runs. Wang will get it together and Pettitte is a 2nd half pitcher.

Yes, they are in last place, but the division is so tight, if they go on a win streak they can be in first in two weeks.

Remember last year!

After the Zito fiasco, I don't know how eager teams are going to be to sign starters to long-term, expensive contracts. It'll be interesting to see what the market for guys like CC turns out to be.

That's why Yankee fans aren't upset about the Santana thing. It'll be years before we know whether it would've been a good idea. The Mets have a 7-4 starter for $20mm/year and we have a bunch of young prospects. The jury will be out on this one for a long, long time.

June 9, 2008  08:53 AM ET

Here's what I see as the starting roatation for next year, if not by August: Chambelain, Kennedy, Hughes, Wong and Rasner. Maybe Giese can spell a starter every now and then or work into middle relief. Either way, they need to shore up the pen with some middle relief, 'cause what they got now with Joba out just ain't working. Pettite will be gone, maybe back to Houston or just retired, and Moose, if he hangs around, will go to the pen, a la Smoltz. He's been pretty sharp on the rare occasion he's called from the pen. Definately would be a brighter outlook than the mess they've got going on right now.

June 9, 2008  10:57 AM ET

'C.C. may seem like a good fit but he has an absolutely atrocious record at yankee stadium '

yeah, but that's cause he was FACING the Yankees. In this case he'd BE a Yankee. His pitching in Yankee stadium probably had to do with facing the Yankee's brutal offense over the years, not the actual stadium itself...

June 9, 2008  12:28 PM ET

Santana was a different deal.....
we had to GIVE UP prospects.
Free Agents are a whole different abllgame- all we have to do is PAY for them

and with the yankee bank account - who cares?
there is no 'cap'-

if we can gett CC & Tex- that would be GREAT

But no Ben sheets.....too injury prone
Burnett....? same issues as sheets....never healthy.....but has been better as of late

June 9, 2008  12:55 PM ET

hey where are all the haters to come on here and tell us how joba sux and kennedy sux and hughes sux?

only 20 comments and nothing about how the yanks suck?

June 9, 2008  12:56 PM ET

not sure I like the CC possibility...not sold on him.

like the tex possibility...

June 9, 2008  01:23 PM ET

June 9, 2008  01:55 PM ET

PATHETIC!

June 9, 2008  04:08 PM ET

thats alot of things the yankees better hope for this year. it would be a shame for cc to sign with yanks hes a good guy

June 9, 2008  09:02 PM ET

do we really need tex look at what giambi is doing at the moment and do we ant to risk matsui's arm again and put him in the outfield

Right...b/c they don't sign free agents in the offseason. If you think that's next years starting rotation, you need your head examined afro

June 9, 2008  10:28 PM ET

Who wrote this article? Brian Cashman?.....the litany of deals gone bad continues....Pavano, Igawa, Kennedy, Hughes....etc....plus no proven starter that has won ANYTHING in the postseason.....

Fire Cashman..time for a makeover...

June 10, 2008  01:41 PM ET

as a yankees fan i hate to admit that i dont think they're making the playoffs this season. but is anyone going to mention, or has anyone even noticed that the mets, with johan "the savior" santana, aren't looking playoff bound either?? i agree they yanks would probably be better off with him, at least for now, but he's certainly not the beginning and end of the yankees problems this season

I just heard today that Brad Penny gets added to the list.
