Williams using up excuses?

I've heard a lot of excuses for an NFL player missing voluntary off-season workouts, but none as hilarious as Roy Williams'. Williams missed the Lions' organized team activities two weeks ago. He said he missed Monday's workouts because he accidentally booked his flight a day late. He missed Tuesday's workout because of bad weather. And then he figured, why come for one day? So he skipped Wednesday. For those scoring at home: that brings Williams to a total of three excuses. But don't worry, everybody! Williams pinky-swears he isn't bothered by his contract. Williams is in the last year of his deal and has not been offered an extension. Of course he must be irritated, and you know what? It doesn't matter.

That's what happens when a school has such low recruiting academic standards.

June 9, 2008  06:24 AM ET

A lot of maturity and character.

June 9, 2008  06:35 AM ET

That's too bad because the Lions are such a respectable organization. You know this team will win at least 10 games.

Have Katrina Hancock investigate and Millen rectify. Some of you will understand that.

June 9, 2008  06:39 AM ET

OK, hint: Katrina thinks the Stanley cup was used to put water in an old steam car.

"That's too bad because the Lions are such a respectable organization. You know this team will win at least 10 games"

LOL.

We'll see you in Dallas Roy

June 9, 2008  08:51 AM ET

The Lions are 31-81 since Matt got phat and if they start moving toward .500 -- the world will rock! Look out!

June 9, 2008  08:53 AM ET

Seems a lot of ex Longhorns are **** bags.......

June 9, 2008  09:19 AM ET

Can you really fault a guy for not wanting to come to VOLUNTARY Lions' activities? Honestly, showing up for regular season games should be voluntary, this team is that bad...

June 9, 2008  10:36 AM ET

Haters are out in force today.

June 9, 2008  11:08 AM ET

The Lions one of the biggest jokes in the nfl this is so fitting to have williams on the team. They need to offer an extension to make it more laughable.

June 9, 2008  11:43 AM ET

The man hates his job right now and he's dismayed that he hasn't gotten paid, and that he may have to wait another year if he is franchised. I feel for him and I wouldn't want to be "stuck" on the lions. It's not being a hater to say they haven't been good for a long long time. Barry Sanders was 1 season from breaking Walter Payton's record and look how that turned out. Roy's one of the few really good pics they have made and that's mainly the reason he want's out. He doesn't want to be the Manning in New Orleans with AAA talent all around him.

June 9, 2008  12:41 PM ET

You are right! The Lions are a joke! The Detroit Lions defeated the Dallas Cowboys, 15-10, in the final game at the Pontiac Silverdome. And neither franchise has won a playoff game since the 1990s.

June 9, 2008  12:59 PM ET

The Cowboys have managed to win a few Super Bowls, as well. The Lions are where medicore players go to die.

June 9, 2008  01:02 PM ET

I can't blame Roy Williams for wanting out. He's played at a very high level since being drafted, and he realized that (1) this team will never be good; and (2) they won't pay him market value,

Many teams (Dallas, especially) would trade a 1st rounder for him. The Lions aren't making the playoffs this year anyway. Trade him for something or get nothing.

June 9, 2008  01:06 PM ET

I'm still holding onto a thread of hope for this team to be better. I hope that Calvin Johnson can play a full healthy this year and show Roy how to be a real receiver and a real team player. If the line can keep Kitna from being sacked every other down they might be fun to watch. Still think they'll lose 12 though. Can't help but watch them, it's like a car crash. Just like watching the Maple Leafs you kind of have to look.

June 9, 2008  03:02 PM ET

Give him Fitzgerald money or Moss or Owens money and he will show up. Or trade him now and get a first round pick.

A first round pick for roy williams you have to be joking
