More Cardinals pitching woes

Mark Mulder might never pitch again. He has said no to a third surgery on his shoulder so the hope is that cortisone shots and mechanical changes can ease the pain that has forced him to shut down rehab stints twice for St. Louis. Matt Clement finally did get on the mound in the Cardinals' minor-league system but reportedly is throwing only in the high-80s.

woop-dee-doo. This guys' being held together with duct tape and some gum at this point.

June 9, 2008  06:53 AM ET

I feel sorry for the guy. He's tried everything; but , still can't get healthy.

It's been clear for months that Mulder is finished. Clement was a long shot at best. Carpenter is still out, Pineiro and Thompson are down. Wainwright and Wellemyer are walking wounded. Izringhausen, Jiminez, Johnson and Kinney are on the DL. Yeah, you might say we have some pitching woes. We've got an entire pitching staff making over 30 million on the DL.

quit yer griping. the best thing that happened is that the laundry list you just tossed out there are all injured. Reason is they all suck.

There was a time when trolls executed their craft with pride and skill. Now they are just hacks throwing around the word sucks. It's a sad state of affairs when the trolls become unimaginative hacks.

It's ok for me to accept that Mulder is a lost cause at this point. The only thing that still stings is what we gave up for this lemon!

June 9, 2008  10:40 AM ET

Dandy Lion - that is an idiotic comment. You're saying that Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright suck.....Go back to the sandbox and play with the other little kids.

82- I know what you mean, I don't fault Mulder, but then I think about Haren and Daric Barton....it's painful......

LaRussa and Duncan have held this pitching staff together before through injuries, and they may be able to do it again, but if we lose Wellemeyer and Adam for any extended period, boy, it's going to be tough. It leaves us with Lohse, Looper and 3 rookies.....

June 9, 2008  11:59 AM ET

If this is true, who do the Cardinals package up for a trade? Reyes and Chris Duncan? We might get a half eaten can of Pringles for both of them. The bottom line is that the trigger needs to pulled on Mulder and we need a left handed starter.

June 9, 2008  12:29 PM ET

I think you're right, I don't think either of them will bring much in a trade. There just isn't much trade bait in the organization, unless you start looking at dealing Rasmus....but I don't want to mortgage the future for mediocre starting pitchers.....

June 9, 2008  12:46 PM ET

Bryan Anderson should fetch value in return. We have a few more young outfielders doing very well at AAA and AA. We should deal them if we can get a quality SP in return. I'm not saying we should deal them for an old summer rental. We could deal them for someone with a future.

Anderson will have to be dealt eventually. Yadi is our catcher and that's final.

June 9, 2008  02:46 PM ET

I can't believe everybody is ready to give up on this guy. Where would the Padres be if they had taken this attitude with Mark Prior?

June 9, 2008  03:04 PM ET

Horrible trade when they traded Haren for him. But at least they still got a title even if he didn't help them get it.

June 9, 2008  03:06 PM ET

Yeah, I forgot about Anderson....but you're right...he's got trade value.

Chest - that is a hilarious comment.......

Nobody really seems to talk about it but notice all of the "good" players who suddenly can't play so well anymore or who are getting hurt more and more or who can't find jobs.....steroids continues to take its toll. Face it, a lot of guys made a lot of money but they do they owe their "success" more to chemical enhancement than to talent? Most successful players from the last 15 years are tainted goods.

His was not steroids though. His age finally caught up with him.

"I'm so glad we had this time together just to make a buck and say so long - seems we just got started and before you know it my arm went dead I really don't know went wrong" !!!

June 9, 2008  06:21 PM ET

I don't necesarily buy that, imanogre. Pitchers have been having career ending arm problems for a lot longer than the steroid era....
