Cuban taking peek at Cubs books

Mark Cuban gets his first peek under the Cubs' hood today. The Dallas Mavericks owner and Internet billionaire is eagerly awaiting the ''book'' that will tell him precisely what Cubs owner Sam Zell is selling. The long-awaited financial details are expected to be sent to ownership groups pre-approved by Major League Baseball as early as today. That's when the process really will begin. And that's when Cuban and Zell could learn that what they want out of a deal that will shape the future of the Cubs' venerable, ivy-covered franchise is a mere trifle compared to what baseball wants.

are those the real books or the one's IRS and the media get their info from?

It'd be a change from the current management, for sure, to have Cuban own the Cubs. But I'd hate to see Cuban hex the current best-record-in-baseball Cubs in what could be their year.

In the past, with the cheapskate, skinflint, cheap ass management that the Cubs had, and their abysmal record over the years, it'd be a good thing to have Cuban own them. But there's been a turnaround in recent years, and I LOVE Sweet Lou as manager. Le's not hoodoo the voodoo.

As a lifelong Cubs fan I am scared about a new owner. Right now the Cubs have a pretty large payroll because they have huge revenue, With a new owner they could choose to pocket the money like the Twins owner and not spend it on players.

OR...now follow me here....OR they could do something that hasn't been done in 100 years.

I don't know ... hasn't seemed to work out for the Mavs so far.

No Cuban.

Call me what you will, but any guy who willingly trashes our troops in a horrible movie shouldn't be the caretaker of a the national past time.

Go away, Mark - and take Chicago's Olympic bid with you, if you would.

Why doesn't Cuban just open up a team in Dallas? That way the Mark Cuban stench just kind of stays around there...I'm so glad this guy doesn't own the Cowboys though.

June 9, 2008  10:02 AM ET

Yep...its a new week. I can tell a new week by the posting of an article saying that "Cuban might buy the Cubs". Why doesn't he just buy the stinking team so the Chicago and Dallas newspapers will stop talking about it?

June 9, 2008  10:15 AM ET

A meddlesome, clueless, megalomaniac owner with a fat check book running a major market sports franchise. Always works out well. Can't wait for the show to begin.

OK, I get all of the resentment towards Mark Cuban if you want to say that Dallas has never won a title... but I have a question for you. Do any of you remember the Maverics before they had Cuban? they were the laughing stock of basketball. They sucked on a level that could barely be equalled. All he did was dump a lot of his money into players, new facilites, etc, and make them a household name and a playoff contender. He cant shoot the ball for them too.

What a kill joy .... don't you know that FN is here purely so people can take uninformed swipes at whoever they want.... and then the rest of us can kill them for it....

June 9, 2008  11:45 AM ET

Whoa, whoa, whoa...hold on a second. Cuban might buy the Cubs?! Why hasn't this been a huge story yet?

June 9, 2008  12:29 PM ET

As a Brewers fan, I'm terrified of what he might do to the Cubs, mainly because he'll be willing to spend money on players. The Cubs are one of the wealthiest teams in the entire league, yet they always suck anyway because of stingy owners. Cuban's passion for the Mavs is a scary thought if applied to the Cubs.

Is that right? Well how about THAT!

June 9, 2008  01:25 PM ET

I want to do Cuban

June 9, 2008  02:26 PM ET

as a cubs fan i would love to see mark cuban buy the team....the cubs have spent money the last 10 yrs....but not wisely. they go after the sorianos, the guys who create a lot of excitement but don't necessarily help you win. of course they do this, the cubs are gonna sell tickets whether they win or lose.

i like cuban b/c his bottom line isn't money, it's winning. i think he'll spend with an eye toward winning, this will be an improvement over years past.

June 9, 2008  02:26 PM ET

Mavericks havent won but they have been in the finals and they have been in the playoffs like 7 or 8 years in a row.......cubs havent been to the playoffs back ti back years in a while this would be great .......hes not scared to buy the talent he needs like past management has.

June 9, 2008  02:46 PM ET

Whoever it is that ends up shaking hands with Sam Zell on any kind of a deal better count his fingers!

June 9, 2008  04:43 PM ET

Cuban needs a MLB team. Those old farts need some life breathed into them. Maybe Cuban can talk them into a salary cap.

June 9, 2008  05:19 PM ET

The Cubs are doing JUST fine without Mark Cuban and "his books" !!!
