Mayo in the mix for second pick?

Move over Michael Beasley and Derrick Rose. Ovinton J'Anthony Mayo has requested a table for three. Judging by Heat president Pat Riley's resent itinerary and guard Dwyane Wade's Sunday semi-endorsement, there is growing evidence and confirmation now that this is at least a three horse race for Miami's No. 2 pick in the June 26 NBA Draft.

I can see it, since the NBA is swinging into becoming a guard-strong league.

Oh wow, didn't even realize it before, but now I see why he goes by "OJ". That's a horrible name...gotta love parents for giving their children undesireable names. That's almost as bad as Eggbert.

His parents didn't name him O.J, - He's Ovington J'Anthony Mayo. And going by O.J. wasn't the worst thing in the world until 14 years ago. Surely Mayo's a bit older than that.

I think Mayo could have a bigger upside than Beasley-
- but Mayo also could turn into Ricky Davis-

That's where my comment came from. You must not read well. Because his name is Ovington J'Anthony, I can see why he goes by OJ....nevermind why am I explaining myself over the internet?

If pat riley picks OJ mayo ahead of beasley, he needs to get fired.

i think so too. especially after seeing paul explode into the league the way he did. don't get me wrong i don't think he's another paul but he definitely has a similar skill set. mayo might be a better 2 than 1 in the league tho

Trade down....get a squad....Mayo, Beasley, whoever---they wont give you more than 34 wins this year...that's not so great. Trade down build your squad PAT: don't trade for played out 30 somethings this time.

June 9, 2008  10:22 AM ET

if i were them i'd trade down for a true point guard in bayless or augustin

June 9, 2008  10:22 AM ET

I think Mayo is too similar to Wade...same size, similar athleticism, but Mayo has an edge in shooting. Unless they don't plan to keep Wade(which i think they should), i don't see the logic. If they don't draft Beasley or can't manage to get Rose, I would say just trade the pick all together and get some proven vets. They needed to have proven vets when they won the title, so why not now.

June 9, 2008  10:24 AM ET

yeah.....why take on a proven point guard when you can trade down and get an unproven rookie....nonsense. get miller millicic and conley/lowery for the # 5 and jwill, d-cook, and the #2.

June 9, 2008  10:25 AM ET

I hear that nobody in Detroit is untouchable except Rodney Stuckey - that means Billups is on the market. But I seriously doubt he'll be moving anywhere.

June 9, 2008  10:31 AM ET

paul? are u kidding me?? Rose is way better then mayo @ pg and people are now comparing mayo to paul???

June 9, 2008  10:35 AM ET

Mayo and Paul are not even close in my opinion. Mayo reminds me of a Jamal Crawford, very gifted at scoring, but does the team really win that much? Sure he is probably going to be a good defender, but that will take time.

June 9, 2008  10:46 AM ET

When was the last time that USC produced a true star in basketball? Harold Miner was the only name that I can remember, but Baby Jordan also went to the Heat then disappeared off the radar.

June 9, 2008  10:47 AM ET

Bad move Riles

Take Beasley and trade Haslem, it gives the heat options

Or put Beasley at C next to Haslem

June 9, 2008  10:54 AM ET

a 6 7 center....great move....maybe u should call pat and suggest it.

June 9, 2008  11:11 AM ET

Mayo can play but you better be ready to pay... he brings money baggage but he is a solid player.

June 9, 2008  11:28 AM ET

Two undersized players on the frontline...They would have a worse record next year! If they take Beasley then another trade is a must, the only question is for who and for what? They should trade down though.

June 9, 2008  11:38 AM ET

It's funny how this discussion changed now that we know that Beasley is only 6'7" and Rose is only 6'1".... Mayo is not really ready to star in the NBA.... lots of holes in his game still, although his athleticism is sick.... I can't really see him as PG, though....
