Blue Jays cool on acquiring Bedard

Erik Bedard continues to be a topic of interest in Toronto, which is about a three-hour drive from his Navan, Ontario, home. Bedard is set to become a free agent after the 2009 season, and there is widespread speculation he could sign with the Blue Jays. But sources in Toronto indicated on Monday that the team has cooled on Bedard and may no longer be interested in acquiring him - now or later. The Jays have had some public-relations issues the past few seasons with A.J. Burnett, a pitcher expected to use an escape clause to opt out of his five-year deal with Toronto after this season.

He's been completely ineffective. Why would the Jays want him? They need a bat not a pitcher.

Btw: Nice pic. "Is my bazball!" Just don't touch his ears.

Agreed. Jays need a bat, and one that is useful with runners in scoring position.

And that would likely cost them either Marcum or McGowan, leaving the Jays with a huge hole in the rotation.

the hell with jays.....come play for the yanks

Do the Jays really need any more starting pitching they already havre arguably the best starting rotation in the league.

June 10, 2008  08:51 AM ET

to hell with yanks and the Red Sox........Come play for the Florida marlins.

June 10, 2008  09:28 AM ET

Looks like the Orioles made a great trade!

June 10, 2008  09:33 AM ET

escape clause.... show me the money!!!! sad

June 10, 2008  09:49 AM ET

The article makes it seem like the Jays are considering getting Bedard and getting rid of Burnett... which would be a welcomed move. Burnett is so inconsistent, and at his salary the Jays are better off letting him go. I'd take Bedard in a second over AJ.

And to further frighten GMs away from long-term deals with expensive pitchers, I offer you Dontrell Willis' performance last night.

Any GM who signs a starter to any sort of a 5+ yr, $75mm+ contract will lay awake every night until it's over.

Nothing moves but the money any more. Even the Red Sox finally figured out that - after hollering "you bought that World Series!" for years, they got into the bidding themselves.

Look at his face.

"Have you seen my baseball?..."

June 10, 2008  10:13 AM ET

Is he mouthing an enormous cookie, or a small Frisbee?

June 10, 2008  10:36 AM ET

Bedard is still good. He'll be fine, but the losing in Seattle this year has to be frustrating after losing in Baltimore. Seattle was supposed to be good.

Send him to Toronto for Marcum, Stairs and a minor leaguer.

June 10, 2008  10:41 AM ET

I can't see seattle trading him...I think they only need a bat or two to get them to the playoffs. If they keep building instead of dumping salary they will get to where they want to be. How do you trade prospects for pitching, then dump salary, particularly the pitcher you just acquired. That is poor management.

June 10, 2008  10:58 AM ET

Marcum, Stairs and a minor leaguer??
that
makes
no
sense

June 10, 2008  11:00 AM ET

burnett for a bat makes more sense to me

June 10, 2008  11:10 AM ET

I hate him, but, Seattle could use B*nds.

June 10, 2008  11:11 AM ET

I can't believe we're not even at the All-Star break and the Mariners already want to dump him.

June 10, 2008  11:52 AM ET

3 hour drive from his ontario home? it's a 1 hour flight from NYC or BOS or most any other east coast team (cle, pit, chi, det)...let's not be so geographically limiting.

I like him with the yanks better than the CC scenario....not sure how they get that done however...not sure how the sox get it done either. Unless SEA is interested in either crisp or ellsbury...the young sox pitchers have shown too much promise (in my opinion) I'd be surprised if the sox would be willing to part with any of them for bedard. It would round out that CLE staff nicely if they could pull it off, especially if they plan on losing CC.
