Owens: I never failed drug test

Terrell Owens is now subject to increased screenings for performance-enhancing drugs after the veteran receiver did not make himself available for a recent NFL-administered random test. As a result, Owens has been placed in the NFL's "reasonable cause" testing program, sources said, though Owens said he has never failed a test in his 12-year career and passed his most recent test. Owens said the league did not have an up-to-date cellphone number for him, leading to the miscommunication. While it is not uncommon for players to switch cellphone numbers or have multiple cellphones, changes in off-season phone numbers and addresses must be reported to the steroid program advisor. Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said he was aware of Owens' meeting before giving the Pro Bowl receiver a $12.9 million signing bonus as part of a four-year, $34 million contract extension last week.

The Biggest non-story of the year

June 10, 2008  06:45 AM ET

Why doesn't SI give an award for best Avatar photo every month? Maybe $50,000 or so for gas. And we can vote for stuff like the photo above where Jones hadn't completely materialized from the transporter or the other dimension he was in. I will be slow to dis him again and Bond better watch out. Could that guy from Quantum leap be running the Cowboys? THAT would explain a lot. Now if we could just explain Matt Millen..

Maybe $50,000 or so for gas? How about 10,000 gallons of gas? a better investment.

sounds like you know from experience.....lol

Test the guy seven day a week. Test him twice a day. For crying out loud, he missed a phone call or two......Big deal! He's come clean for twelve years. He's apparently missed ONE testing in that time. If I had an employee for twelve years, and a fairly good one at that, and he doesn't show for one day of work (with a justifiable excuse), then what's the problem?

cause it raises suspicion. i just don't buy the 'they didn't have my cell phone #'; c'mon. no one in the organization knew how to get a hold of this guy to provide a sample. i know a bunch of people that have passed a urinanalysis regularly but they still use. so that means very little. the fact is he blew off the test. maybe its a none issue maybe its not. maybe he smokes a little cheeba in the offseason and wanted to wait until he fully got it out of his system. maybe he's just a dope. usually when you miss something like this....its because you are hiding something......ask any user. he's never missed one before, so why now?? and don't tell me cause they couldn't contact him.

As soon as I saw this story yesterday afternoon I knew T&R would have it up so every Cowboys fan could defend TO and every Cowboys hater could bash TO.

I'm usually a Cowboys hater but even I have to admit this is a non-story that isn't worth T&R status. But since T&R stands for TMZ of course this is up for discussion when Strahan retiring is not.

June 10, 2008  08:08 AM ET

he continues to be a weird, dopey-arse dude...

June 10, 2008  08:08 AM ET

freaky weird...

June 10, 2008  08:09 AM ET

I have to retract my statement about not including Strahan. Nope, T&R just tossed that in midday yesterday apparently.

this is a ridiculous story. How about you give his agent a fine for not passing on the message that he needed to go get tested? Test TO more when he's clean and let some other druggies go untested.

Stupid
