Is Del Negro desperate choice?

The choice of Vinny Del Negro, which reportedly might be announced as soon as today, seems desperate. Until the hire becomes official -- we know that nothing is certain until an official announcement is made, thank you chairman Jerry Reinsdorf -- we can hope the Bulls are merely floating the idea to gauge public reaction. But at this moment, only one conclusion is possible: The Bulls have blown it again. After a nearly two-month search, Del Negro is the best they can do? Paxson is willing to hand over the team, not to mention the No. 1 pick in the upcoming draft, to a rookie coach? How could Paxson go from wooing the best available coaching candidate in Mike D'Antoni, to reaching out for the comfort of an old friend in Doug Collins, to settling for Del Negro, who has never coached before?

**** me. What the **** is wrong with Paxson and Reinsdorf? Is it possible to come up with a more ****** up scenario? Draft OJ Mayo, for example?

Good questions. I wonder what makes them choose one rookie coach over another though because I thought Mark Jackson was a popular name being thrown around.

Call it desperate if you like. With all the options available to them, it's STUPID.

Ok, I'm confused. Why has nobody gone after Avery Johnson?

no doubt. the bulls hire a pretty much unknown and pass on a proven head coach......i don't get it either.

It took six months to hire this guy? Why not Flip Saunders or Avery Johnson? He may ok, but you always take a gamble on a rookie. Oh well, Chicago sports teams always have to do things the hard way. We'll see.

Isn't it obvious? Reinsdorf refuses to dish out any cash to bring in a real coach with experience. He's a Cheap old Bastardd, and I at one time supported him, but this move stinks! I've completely lost faith in Bulls management. Not to knock Del Negro, and hopefully he'll be able to surprise us, and be a good coach. to soon to tell, but right now I'm very disappointed they didn't bring in a guy who's done it before.

You think any of these guys will remember Del Negro from NBA Jam?

June 10, 2008  10:10 AM ET

Relax Chicago fans, I know what you're going through. A few months ago, Dan Snyder hired Jim Zorn and many of us Redskins faithful were left scratching our heads. I don't know what happened, but I guess I'm drinking the Kool-Aid because I'm pretty excited about our chances this year. Anyway, keep your heads up.

But don't expect too much...

this is the same vinny who said the spurs would not win a title with out his mid range game....4 titles later his basketball genius still shines. chicago is scraping the bottom of the barrel. good luck getting his opnion on who to take with the number one pick.

Every great coach has to get a first shot sometime.

That said, I doubt that Del Negro will be a great coach. But you never know.

The question is, why is Paxson willing to gamble his job on Del Negro?

June 10, 2008  10:38 AM ET

This could be just a good media spin. A couple of reporters and low-level team guys sitting with drinks batting names around. Then the next day it hits the papers.

Or we may be seeing the continued collapse of an NBA team if the Bulls are spinning this much out of control. They could have hired at least two good coaches by now and they are going to pick up a rookie coach? From a non-Chicago resident, it looks like the owner and GM are floundering.

Reinsdorf is fiscally conservative w/ the Bulls b/c his payroll for the Sox is higher than he'd like. Reality is that REINSDORF himself is responsible for the Bulls recent demise: bringing in Ben Wallace, who destroyed any control Skiles had of the team is what got this all started. I hope Del Negro learned A LOT from Popovich when he was in San Antonio. If not this is terrible... then again, would the rifle man be any better? How about Dwayne Casey? He did a GREAT job in Minnesota.

June 10, 2008  11:07 AM ET

As a long time San Antonio resident and Spurs fan, I hate to be the one to tell you but Del Negro was just a role player and not any sort of team leader for the Spurs. He was a nice guy but he didn't stay around long after Popovich took over.

Then again we did see him on the golf courses all the time!

The Bulls are trying to fix their problems on the cheap. When it doesn't work, and the team doesn't improve, they'll blame it on the coach's inexperience. Meanwhile, the team will suck for 3 more years. D'Antoni, Avery, Flip, or Collins would command a salary commensurate with his experience. How can you trust a front office that would send Michael, Pippen, and Phil Jackson packing. They're idiots. Bulls fans deserve better than this.

This does seem rather anti-climactic after the big names bandied about during the search.

How far has Avery Johnson's star fallen that he barely got mentioned in the past few weeks for some of these vacancies?

At least he isn't a re-tread.......
