Theodore close to Avs return

Is a deal between the Avalanche and goalie Jose Theodore imminent? Judging by the words of Theodore's agent, Don Meehan, that seems possible. "I think things could accelerate quickly," Meehan said Monday. If Theodore signs elsewhere, the Avalanche would face a quandary at the goal- tending position. Peter Budaj, who has one year left on his contract, lost his starting job to Theodore in January and has yet to prove himself as an elite NHL goalie. The pickings would be slim on the free-agent market if the Avs were forced into that option. Theodore probably would be considered the best goalie available on the open market.

Theodore the best on the market. Ouch! Not a good market this year. I would like to see this guy return to form, just don't think it's going to happen, I hope the Av's don't spend too much on him. They better draft the best goalie available this year and get him into the system. Unless they already have a good prospect. But the Av's have got a lot of holes to fill at this point.

YAWN!!!! Has Forsberg retired (again) yet?

June 10, 2008  10:38 AM ET

DCruiser... Again? Forsberg hasn't retired once yet. I think that Theo will take a "hometown discount" of sorts to stay in Colorado. There's no way he's getting $6 mil this year. That would be a mistake. I just hope the 2nd half of last year wasn't a fluke. If it wasn't, $4 mil a year would turn out to be a steal. Otherwise, it's wasted money.

evolv....agreed, the AVs have more problems than just Theodore signing. He's a good goalie don't get me wrong...but the best on the market? yikes...that's a scarey prospect for anyone looking to fill problems in goal. The AVs gotta get rid of the the retirement home crowd for starters. Foote should go to the Kings and play on a line with Blake...they could trip you with their walkers.

and Foppa is finished..he'll never play more than 10 games in a row without then sitting out the next 10...retire already

June 10, 2008  11:06 AM ET

You're right, wtnelson, Foppa only made a half dozen comebacks.

June 10, 2008  11:10 AM ET

I hear Ray Emery is available

June 10, 2008  11:14 AM ET

Avs would be smart to resign Theodore.

June 10, 2008  12:50 PM ET

I wouldn't like to be an Avs fan right about now.

June 10, 2008  02:09 PM ET

They could always sign Raycroft

June 10, 2008  02:43 PM ET

Dominik might be coaxed out of retirement. Hey, he's got 2 rings now.
There's experience. Keep a stash of inhalers close by for him...that thin
mountain air & all.

June 10, 2008  03:05 PM ET

He'd quickly rush back into retirement when he realized what playing behind an average team was like again, not the best defensive team in the league.

June 10, 2008  03:25 PM ET

For the record, no Avs fan is saying that we desperately want Theodore back. BGM may be on to something with a trade. Secondly, DCruiser, yes, Forsberg has made several comebacks, but they were from injury, not retirement. And third, there is a goalie that played for the Lake Erie Monsters, the Avs AHL affiliate, for the past 2 years that the Avs are very high on named Tyler Weiman. He is familiar around here because, when he was 19, he backstopped the 2nd year Colorado Eagles to a Central Hockey League title. That may not seem like anything, but, at the time, the Eagles were affiliated with the Pittsburgh Penguins organization. Weiman looks like he could be a very good NHL goaltender.

I'd rather have Budaj. Is Conlkin a FA? He was one of the main reasons the Pens made the playoffs. Oh yes I went there. Maybe go after Valiquette! IDK

June 10, 2008  07:06 PM ET

Best goalie on the market? NO WAY. NO WAY. You're NO HUET, JOSE!!!

June 10, 2008  08:06 PM ET

Kolzig might be good for another couple of years. Get him.

June 11, 2008  05:26 AM ET

I wonder what Ottawa will do seeing as most of the availble goalies are really old or one trick ponies..... so what to do... stay with repeat offender RAY or through a bone to one of the contestants available in the summer... I guess the other option is a TRADE, but the concept of actually trading for good players in the offseason is slowly becoming extint in the NHL!!!

and.........one more pity call to Bostongm

BOURQUE IS BETTER THAN LIDSTROM!!!!! because the ROCK says so!
