Pistons' biggest worry about Curry
Basketball smarts is the biggest question about new Pistons coach Michael Curry. He has been an assistant for one year. Can he make adjustments in the middle of a helter-skelter NBA game? Well, in his first two seasons as a Pistons player, Curry spent most of his time on the bench. He always -- always -- sat next to Hammond, one of Doug Collins' top assistants. "He was in my ear constantly," former Pistons assistant John Hammond said. "And the amazing thing about it to me was that so many of the things he was saying were right on. I can't tell you how many of the things he said to me that I passed along to Doug Collins." When Tayshaun Prince was a rookie, Rick Carlisle kept Curry as his starting small forward. It was probably a mistake -- Prince is a much better player than Curry. But Curry had that kind of effect on coaches. They clung to him. He understood the game on a different level from other players.

I have no worries. Will we make it 7 Eastern Conferences in a row? Maybe not, but I think we are closer to the next championship. Dumars wanted to put his stamp on the team, but people like Brown and Flip weren't excited about it. The first couple of years will be a Curry/Dumars coached team. I think we will be ok.

Is Joe Dumars the problem? Look at how many coaches he has hired and fired. This really looks like a move that allows Dumars to completely control everything. As much as I respect Joe I do have to question these coaching moves. I am not thrilled with the Curry move. A veteran contending team needs an experienced coach.

Well this Denver trade looks more serious than I thought. No way can the Pistons bring in a coach that doesn't command any respect, and expect veteran players to buy into his new system.

One of the major questions will be if Curry can adjust his strategy as the game progress? With veterans on Detroit the answer is yes.

Agreed Hllywd.
The negative commentary about Flip Saunders in his first year from the Detroit veterans (namely Ben Wallace), shows that you need a proven coach who can command respect from succesful veterans.
It would be good if Detroit can succeed beyond expectations versus just meeting them next year.

hahahahahahahahaha goodbye pistons. great move firing the coach that go you to the eastern conference finals, and lost by a hair. it would make sense if a coach missed the playoffs or had a really crappy season...but come on. The pistons got outplayed by the better team and instead of biding their time to get another shot they leave it all in the hands of a rookie coach. nice seeing ya!

Joe Dumars is an idiot

At first I thought the Suns with Porter and now the Pistons with Curry were possibly bad moves. But think about it both of these guys were long career players in the NBA. Why not? a couple young enthusiastic guys, not more of the old guy who may have failed at multiple other chances, like Saunders, Carlisimo, Nelson, etc..
Bring on the new blood!

Joe Dumars is not an idiot, he's one made one bad move (Darko), and the Pistons are not going anywhere. First off Saunders didn't "get" the Pistons to the E. Conf finals, just about any coach could have taken those teams to the finals. Rather what he did do, is lose each one of those finals by making really really bad coaching choices.
As for Curry, new face, new coach, he will demand respect or he will fall flat on his face too. Simple as that, is they respect him, he can motivate them, and they can play to their potential.

Yeah, Curry's a good pick for coach other than his lack of 'basketball smarts'. Isn't 'basketball smarts' about the only thing that matters for a basketball coach? Hopefully he has good 'press-conference skills' so he can coherently explain to the media why the Pistons are tanking in '08-'09.

If the Pistons are "worried" why did they hire him in the first place ???

Phoenix Suns with Porter, Detroit Pistons with Curry, Chicago Bulls with Del Negro, at least the faces will be different in the suits next year.
It seems that all these teams are at a crossroads. It will be interesting to see what they do after the all-star break and in the playoffs next year (they'll get the benefit of the doubt as new coaches during the first half).

Pistons biggest worry should be Joe Dumars' distorted view that he should win the next 10 championships over the next decade. Their concern should be his dementia - I can bet that if the Pistons move even just 1 member of their starting core, they will be a 40-win team - which fortunately for them is good for anywhere between 6 - 8th seed in the East.
If they move Prince and Sheed (as is rumoured) for whomever, they will be a mediocre - 35-win team struggling to make the playoffs.

I read Curry is making a little bit over $800k/year. Certainly not chump change, but it may explain why he got the nod.
