Donaghy says games tainted by fraternizing

NBA referees, influenced by cozy relationships with league officials, rigged a 2002 playoff series to force it to a revenue-boosting seven games, a former referee at the center of a gambling scandal alleged Tuesday. Without identifying anyone or naming teams, Tim Donaghy also claimed the NBA routinely encouraged refs to ring up bogus fouls to manipulate results but discouraged them from calling technical fouls on star players to keep them in games and protect ticket sales and television ratings. The allegations were contained in a letter filed by a lawyer for Donaghy, who pleaded guilty last year to felony charges alleging he took cash payoffs from gamblers and bet on games himself. The 41-year-old Donaghy faces up to 33 months in prison at sentencing on July 14. The league called Donaghy's allegations false and self-serving, saying the scandal was limited to him and two co-defendants, both former high school classmates who also pleaded guilty to gambling charges.

Thats up to stren to decide

Looks like Stern can't control this guy. And he's saying all the things Stern doesn't want him to say. Watch for the league to help put him away forever if at all possible.

While I can't take his words at face value, Donaghy was nevertheless an insider in the NBA and within the referees at one time...but unfortunately he is just trying to save his own skin. His allegations carry no weight despite the fact that now I can think only of how the Sacramento Kings fell victim to the referess at one time. The true body of evidence lies on the court, with questionable calls in big games, and the questionable way the NBA does business. Take this year's NBA Finals, with probably the best matchup possible for the NBA who can't help but overhype the BOS/LA matchup and the rivalry of the 80's, recalling the glory years of the Association. However the LA Lakers do not belong there. They are the 2-3rd best team in the west, and got there by the league's pulling of strings. The Lakers are going to get swept, and we as fans lose because now professional basketball resembles professional wrestling. Pro Basketball has lost its credibility to me and has also tainted the college game, with (student?) athletes spending 1 year there while soaking up the under-the-table benefits from agents and program boosters.

What did you all think about the other allegation regarding the Mavs vs Rockets in 05? About Cuban complaining about Yao and Yao getting really bad calls in that series because the refs were told to do it? I'm not a Rockets or Mavs fan so does anyone recall the series? Of course, Donaghy didn't use the team names, it was implied by the commentators for tonights game.

June 11, 2008  12:28 AM ET

I recall that series and it would be interesting to find out the refs were helping out the Mavs, if that's what you're saying.

June 11, 2008  12:39 AM ET

I also remember people doubting Jose Canseco. Just because your character is questionable, doesn't mean your lying.

June 11, 2008  12:53 AM ET

When he says they rigged a 2002 playoff series to force it to a revenue-boosting seven games, the only one that year was the Lakers and Kings series.

I haven't watched the NBA since Game six of the NBA finals in that Kings-Lakers western conference finals . . . I became convinced in that one game that the League is fixed akin to Professional Wrestling. Before that, I thought they just didn't know how to call fouls on/against Shaquille, and gave the league the benefit of the doubt. But I don't think I will ever watch the league again, sinc e I always find myself routing for underdogs, and underdogs never, ever win (and they never will) in the NBA. Now, the only time I hear much about the NBA is when there is some controversy regarding bad calls . . . this years call in the San Antonio/Lakers games and last years break of this 'crooked' ref story. This story is just more of the same that I have come to expect from the NBA, and NBA fans are not much higher than the booger eaters who watch Professional Wrestling.

^^^^^ hey the pistons won the crown in '04 as underdogs

Donny Congrads on today win

June 11, 2008  01:30 AM ET

Here's what it says about the 2005 series:

"Team 3 lost the first two games in the series and Team 3's owner complained to NBA officials," the letter said. "Team 3's owner alleged that referees were letting a Team 4 player get away with illegal screens. NBA Executive Y told Referee Supervisor Z that the referees for that game were to enforce the screening rules strictly against that Team 4 player. ... The referees followed the league's instructions and Team 3 came back from behind to win the series. The NBA benefited from this because it prolonged the series, resulting in more tickets sold and more televised games."

June 11, 2008  01:30 AM ET

Well it cant be the Lakers of 2002 they went 15-1 during that run so that rules them out. Spurs in 05' maybe LOL

June 11, 2008  01:35 AM ET

No...the implication was Rockets vs Mavs and we all know Cuban complains about EVERYTHING that doesn't go his way.

June 11, 2008  01:54 AM ET

Boston vs LA, If I were David Stern, that is the finals I would want. It ia also what TV execs want. Much better TV ratings than Phoenix vs Cleveland.

June 11, 2008  02:00 AM ET

perchick - he says it was rigged in 2002. he doesn't mention anything about spurs in '05. anyone else want to ki$s kbryant's a.s$ all day and night? you laker fans are pitiful - SO SELF-IMPORTANT AND self absorbed. what happened in 2005 that stuck in your craw? JEALOUSY, that's all. yes, big star players regularly are not called for fouls. it was sweet bliss to see Kobe get called for non-calls the other day. at least no one one was on their knees for him that day. just because the guy's an absolute great athlete, you gotta bring the spurs into this? you guys are ALWAYS on your knees for Kobe in Lakerland.

June 11, 2008  02:07 AM ET

Perchick, Only 2 series went all 7 in the first round in 05. Boston/Indiana and Rockets/Mavs. I'm going to bet that nobody from Boston/Indiana complained about one player. One only needs to look at Cuban's track record to figure out who it probably was.

June 11, 2008  02:09 AM ET

oh, twangganger, 2005 was also brought up by Donaghey. I guess perchick jumped the gun a bit going after the Spurs.

June 11, 2008  02:11 AM ET

we all see it in every game, every playoffs. every team. perchick - kobe's a great player, so shut up and stop making references that allude to 'oh, that's why they didn't make it that year' as if they automatically would have. The Lakers are not the only team on this planet. In fact, I'm beginning to hate Lakers crybaby/blame-it-on-everyone-else-fans so much that even though I hated the Celtics I hope they crush the Lakers, Do you guys really need to make excuses about why the Lakers didn't go to the finals one year? Could it be that they s%ckt that year? The thing that stinks is the way they call the games in the postseason, period. they want the big names on board. I hope Kobe keeps getting Ts all night, baby, just because people think he is God's gift to wannabees (including himself). It's TEAM. Not Kobe. Kobe cannot win this or any series. No player can. A team, well-oiled, healthy and well-coached. It wasn't my team this year, but I would never delude myself enough to think that one player can win a series. Donaghy was VERY wrong in what he did - if he was jaded, he should have quit. But I beileve he is correct in the statements like pushing it to 'make it go to seven games'. revenue, revenue, revenue.

Thank you for calming my female hormones Alan and Jermoe. I need a Xanax sometimes just reading these messages! It never fails - someone is always on the attack on the Spurs. Leave us alone! We've got ONE professional team in this town. LA has how many professional major sports teams????? What is it with Lakers fans against the Spurs? We obviously posed no threat this year to you, so why are people still brining it up?
