How Porter landed Suns job

The Suns' president of basketball operations and general manager, Steve Kerr, said head coaching experience was one of the key reasons why the team hired Terry Porter to replace Mike D'Antoni. "I think it's very important that he sat in that chair with Milwaukee for a couple of years," Kerr said at the news conference. "It was very important to "Griff" and to me, because this is a very difficult job." During his introduction in Phoenix, Porter referred to his experience with the Bucks in terms of what kind of approach he intends to take with the Suns. "If you think a lot about what I did in Milwaukee . . . I've always believed playing up-tempo and playing fast in this league is important. From a defensive standpoint, you have to have an anchor on the defensive end. You have to have some concepts in place that are going to help."

Good. I'm proud. The Suns, however, unless they add some depth and get a new point guard, are done. Everyone knows Steve Nash's game, because it's pure vanilla.

Porter looks like a "Wise Old Man" kind of coach. He'll be sitting on the sideline with that aged look on his face, while his team is running the fast break at a frenetic pace.
It's good that he joins the Suns, because they have had this type of coach in the past - Cotton Fitzsimmons.

C-Smith - the Suns owe their success over the past few years to Steve Nash.
Your comments are very short-sighted. First of all, no one really "knows" Nash's game, or he would not have scored as many points and dished as many assists as he did - this past year, or any previous year with the Suns. Opposing players have not yet figured out how to defend him.
Second, even if they do "know" his game, they are unable to do anything about it. He has been effective till today. His style is elegant, more so than any other point guard ever. Other top point guards in the league - such as Chris Paul and Deron Williams - may be equally effective as Nash, but they don't have the beauty of his play. Nash is not only effective - he also makes it look easy.

First of all -
porter looks like he's 400 years old in that picture

I have no problem with Porter-
he was a head coach- so he's got some experience.....but isn't a 're-tread' who has been with 4-5 teams already.

Isn't it funny that a GM with no previous experience, would make a statement like "I think it's very important that he sat in that chair with Milwaukee for a couple of years." I'll take a wait and see on this one. The Suns coach is going to have to focus on defense or nothing is going to change.

I agree with you 100%, but that doesn't bode well for the Knicks with D'Antoni.

D'A is not 'oppoesd' to Defense,,,,,,

personell plays a big role-
when you have Nash as your point- it is almost impossible to play solid D

Of course with the nicks personell.........there is NO CHANCE they will.......

Porter was not the right man for the job in PHX but I'm not surprised he got it. He's got a Spurs connection with Kerr, so that was an instant plus. What we needed was someone to slap Amare Stoudemire in the face with a dose of reality. The man to do that was Paul Silas.

If we make it to the playoffs as a five seed next season, I'd consider us lucky.

Porter's approach makes sense but he needs more depth, including a good backup point and center to spell the Sun's two hall of famers. Defense is important and Porter will help. Let's hold our ammunition until we see what happens in the draft.

JL - I completely stand behind you about your comments to C-Smith. Nash is superb, elegant, great competitor and a fine human being to boot. Whens Spurs go against Suns, the first thing that comes to mind is "Nash."

In that photo, Steve Kerr looks like he wants Terry Porter to take him home and make him a man.

June 11, 2008  11:48 PM ET

and that dude DOES look 400 years old. and makes Steve Kerr (whom I adore as a former Spur) look really, really white. Dare I say ****? Hey, I'm one myself, without the millions of dollars.

okay that is just a bad picture. probably good if they were each in their own picture, but it almost seems like Kerr decided to go from tough loud white coach to gramps just to show his diversity. Kerr! I love you anyway, especially when you lose to the Spurs!

Looking at this picture of Terry Porter he looks like a cross between Ray Allen and Bill Cosby !!!

Responding to C-Smith and Jay L

I can't diss Nash & all he's done for the team. He was a perfect fit for D'Antoni's system but now that D'Antoni's gone & Shaq remains, I think it would be prudent for the Suns to try to acquire a point guard that would give them a three-pronged attack. The one guy I'd love to see them get is Devin Harris. I've even dreamed up a trade scenario that might work for both teams: Nash, Brian Skinner, Strawberry & Tucker to the Nets for Harris, DeSagana Diop & Darrel Armstrong. Not only would the Suns get a point guard who could consistently get to the hoop & is a better defender, but they'd also get some much needed experience on the bench.
