Memphis GM rooting for Celtics

Yesterday afternoon, Chris Wallace was working out potential draftees for the Memphis Grizzlies.Last night he was rooting for the Celtics. Rooting hard. Really hard. Not only does he still feel strong ties to the team he worked for until taking over as general manager in Memphis last summer, but Wallace also would like to make sure his in-season trade of Pau Gasol to the Lakers doesn't cost the Celts. "I like Pau, so I hope he plays well," Wallace said. "But not so well that the Celtics don't win." He's from West Virginia, and now, of course, has a place in Memphis, but Wallace has kept his house in the 'burbs west of Boston and will spend some time there this summer.

Chris Wallace...you have no room to speak. YOU made the trade. Good work, smart guy.

Does this mean that the Minnesota GM is rooting for the Lakers, because he "would like to make sure his trade of Kevin Garnett to the Celts doesn't cost the Lakers" ? (Simply replace "Pau Gasol" with "Kevin Garnett", and "Celts" with "Lakers" in the article's sentence.)
Um, I don't think so. Kevin McHale is hoping that his trade _does_ cost the Lakers the championship.
So, there's a big asymmetry here. The men behind both trades are rooting for the Celtics.

Heat Fan - isn't that kind of like rooting for Ron Paul in the coming Presidential election - someone who was eliminated very early on and is no longer in the running?

except that McHale and Wallace both are former Celtics..

June 11, 2008  09:15 AM ET

Of course he's rooting for the Celtics. He traded the difference maker for a pair of sneakers, then realized he screwed up. There are no mulligans in basketball. His only alternative is to root for the Celtics.

June 11, 2008  09:23 AM ET

Who gives a **** what team he's cheering for? He needs to cheer for his own team. He needs to improve Memphis, not yak about the finals.

June 11, 2008  09:36 AM ET

In addition to the fact that he is a moron.......
by saying OUT LOUD he's rooting for anyone makes him a d!@k as well

June 11, 2008  09:40 AM ET

wonder if the lakers will "loan" the trophy to memphis should they win.

June 11, 2008  09:45 AM ET

Chris Wallace deserves a ring should the Lakers win, but I can understand why he's rooting for Boston. He'll look like Santa Claus in L.A.

June 11, 2008  09:53 AM ET

There's not comparing McHale to Wallace, Jay L. The Wolves actually got value in their deal. Al Jeff is going to be a star for years to come. Memphis got Kwame Brown....... McHale didn't just give Garnett away the way Wallace gave Gasol away...... not even close.

@Jay L-- at least McHale had the audacity to ask for draft picks, Al Jefferson, et al
