Dutch star in Galaxy's future?

Edgar Davids, the Dutch midfielder who helped Holland reach the semifinals of the 1998 World Cup and the Euro 2000 semifinals, is a free agent after being released by Ajax Amsterdam. A move to Major League Soccer's FC Dallas fell apart last year. The Galaxy has a Dutch coach, Ruud Gullit, and needs a midfield general, so is it possible?

This could be a great move but how much money is free to sign him?

June 11, 2008  07:24 AM ET

Would the Galaxy really want or be able to take on a 3rd DP? Does the MLS really want one or two teams to eat up a bunch of DP slots?

June 11, 2008  07:37 AM ET

Now the DP is about money right? How much money is that and do you think Davids is going to cost that much... he is 35-36 yrs old

June 11, 2008  07:46 AM ET

He is 38, so that is the type of players we want coming to the MLS....perfect I tell ya, just perfect!\
Old pelotudos coming here to collect the once mighty dollar!

The only guy I see earning his millions and this pains me to say it - Is Blanco from Chicago, dude brings it every game and he plays his arse off! I give up to the guy eventhough he is mexican.

June 11, 2008  07:49 AM ET

Davids was born in 1973. I highly doubt he will take in the money to be a DP, if he isn't designated as a DP, I would take him.

Its a sad day when one midfielder will make, when all is said and done, upwards of $250M over five years and the team is still in need of a "midfield general."

Beckham has been VITAL to LA (who are actually atop their conference table at the moment) he is more than earning his money this year. Although, Blanco is still the most successful DP signing (my Chicago fandom now factoring into that assessment of course :) )

Davids won't require DP money nor could he if he went to LA. They don't have the money for it unless they dump Ruiz or Donovan. Perhaps this will further the Donovan to Europe rumors that have been picking up steam.

June 11, 2008  08:51 AM ET

oh and Davids would be a great add to MLS for the true aficionado. Though the casual fan probably won't 'get' what his game is all about.

June 11, 2008  09:01 AM ET

It would be great to have him in MLS but I'd rather he go somewhere other than LA (I shudder to think what that team would look like if there was no salary cap.) He should go to New York since they now have some extra cash from the sale of Altidore. Toronto would also be a great place for him. They'd worship him at BMO as long as he plays the way we know he can.

June 11, 2008  09:24 AM ET

Good ex Juve player...did he get caught taking some kind of steroid?

June 11, 2008  09:36 AM ET

Before long the Galaxy will have a team full of DP's, its just a matter of the league changing the rules.......again...... and again..... and again.......

The only thing I don't get is why anybody would want him..... he's done. Unless the galaxy plan to open up a retirement home then I don't see why they'd want this guy.

June 11, 2008  09:52 AM ET

Davids would be a fantastic addition...as would Morientes, Figo, Thuram, Mendieta, Sol Campbell, Rivaldo, Kluivert and others on the back 9 of their careers. However, letting all of these guys go to LA is a big mistake. It's time to spread the wealth by sending

It's nice to see all of these great soccer minds confirm that Beckham is not capable of carrying a team on his own...even if it is a reasonably talented team in a mediocre league. Why do we keep talking about the needs of LA? I say spread the wealth...send Davids to New England, DC, San Jose and let one of those teams make a run. Why do we need to keep sending big names to LA?

June 11, 2008  09:56 AM ET

Davids in MLS is long overdue

June 11, 2008  09:57 AM ET

He failed a drug test in 2001 while at Juve...tested positive for Nadrolone. FIFA suspended him, but he kept playing for his club sides. No positives tests since then,

June 11, 2008  09:58 AM ET

Regardless of his age, he is still in very high demand. Kevin Keegan is trying to bring him to Newcastle as we speak.

June 11, 2008  10:23 AM ET

He'd do very well in MLS on the field; and while the everage fan may not get aspects of his game, they will see the desire and work rate. Plus he has sort of a rock star aura about him.

June 11, 2008  10:44 AM ET

Toronto FC should get Davids
