Lefty pitcher in Cubs future

The second left-handed starter that Cubs manager Lou Piniella wants for his rotation could be Sean Marshall if last year's fifth starter makes progress in his next couple of starts for Class AAA Iowa. Marshall made an encouraging, pain-free return from a pulled hamstring Monday, pitching three innings and allowing two runs on six hits. He didn't walk a batter and struck out four in the 58-pitch outing. He's scheduled to start again Saturday. Meanwhile, lefty Rich Hill has continued to struggle with his command and mechanics since his demotion to Iowa more than a month ago and is not considered close to a return.

I expect the Cubs to push hard for Sabathia if the Indians put him on the market. He is the lefty we need.

June 11, 2008  09:12 AM ET

Cubs suck. Yankees will outbid everyone for Sabathia since they let Santana pass them by.

Why is it that every retarded fan for every team thinks his or her team is the frontrunner for a potential free agent?

The Cubs will probably choke this year, and not make the playoffs anyway.

June 11, 2008  09:44 AM ET

I don't know about frontrunner, but I agree with cubswin, that the Cubs will push hard for him. Their rotation is not PO ready, and Sabathia would get them there. As far as my team, the Cards won't be pushing for him, because they'd have to pay him more than $500K, and that is about their limit recently.

June 11, 2008  09:58 AM ET

I highly doubt the Indians would want to trade Sabathia inside the AL. He could haunt them for years. Plus the Cubs have enough ML-ready prospects to trade for Sabathia. A combination of Rich Hill, Eric Patterson, Donald Veal, Sean Gallagher, Sean Marshall, and Matt Murton would be more than enough.

Come on now ten rings, we've got 6 pitcher making over 4 million a year. Unfortunately almost all of them are on the DL so we have to start our league minimum pitchers. We've got over 30 million in annual payrol tied up in injured pitchers.

I don't want to see us go after Sabathia. He's perfect for the Cubs. Tease you all year then choke when the pressure is on.

Have I mentioned lately how much I effin' despise Joe Morgan??/

June 11, 2008  10:24 AM ET

i thought the cubs had their eyes on coco crisp. what ever happened to that?

June 11, 2008  11:26 AM ET

Anyone else catch Billy Davis on the television last nite on WGN?

June 11, 2008  11:26 AM ET

The Cubs aren't doing anything until they finalize the Brian Roberts deal.

June 11, 2008  11:34 AM ET

Brian Roberts? I would just as soon have Mickey Morandini

June 11, 2008  12:27 PM ET

Cards Fan..........speaking of tease, isn't that what your team is doing right now. They are trying to hang around somewhere near the top to keep fans like you believeing ( even though they are being held together with Scotch tape), when we all know that they will drop like flies in the second half......Go CUBBIES!!!!

Mikesturn

Call me when your team actually wins a playoff game. Better yet call me when your team wins a championship. That shouldn't take anymore than a hundred years or so.

June 11, 2008  01:14 PM ET

I can't wait for the CUBS to fall flat on their face again....I can't wait! I have 100 years of history to support it~!

June 11, 2008  02:01 PM ET

Mark DeRosa is a fine 2nd baseman. Don't rock the boat with a discarded Oriole.

June 11, 2008  02:05 PM ET

I hope the cubs go another 100 years without a worldseries.

June 11, 2008  03:17 PM ET

CardsFan2, I agree...... I was speaking sarcastically about the last couple of off-seasons, but you're right.... The Cards can't help that all the stud pitchers they signed got hurt. I suppose that is why they are gun-shy now. But then they mysteriously forked over pretty big dollars for Piniero, based on 11 starts last year. Didn't really understand that one. Anyway, I don't want Sabathia in STL either.

June 11, 2008  03:19 PM ET

MikeSturn - if anyone should know about second half collapses, it would be a Cub fan.........and the Cardinals don't tease their fans, they actually win things like Pennants and World Series titles.......and more than once every 100+ years.......
