Miami defending recruiting turf

In private chats, Florida's Urban Meyer and Florida State's Bobby Bowden admitted last month that with Randy Shannon coaching the Hurricanes, it has become increasingly difficult for them to lure top players from South Florida. But after recent lulls here, both are making a big push for top Dade and Broward 2009 prospects. So impressed with Shannon's recruiting, Bowden is reminded of a UM legend. ''That's where Howard Schnellenberger made a real good move -- wrapping up kids from this area,'' said Bowden, who signed seven players from Miami-Dade from 2004-06 but just one the past two years.

I just hope that Donna Shalala gets caught in the crossfire!

June 11, 2008  11:41 AM ET

Damn TRUTH, someday you've gotta share with the group why you have such an intense hatred of Donna Shalala.

June 11, 2008  12:18 PM ET

She must have asked for bread wth her soup!

June 11, 2008  12:22 PM ET

I can't remember where he is from but I think Shannon is from around that area. Only natural that he would have the success he has had recruiting there. I do know he was a kid from the streets who fought to get where he is at now. Only hope he brings that program back to respectability.

she cheated on him

June 11, 2008  12:46 PM ET

Shalala cheated on Randy Shannon? Damn.

June 11, 2008  12:52 PM ET

Randy Shannon is the black Ron Zook. That is, excellent recruiter and poor head coach. At least he's not senile like Booby Bowdown.

June 11, 2008  01:07 PM ET

when is FSU going to start playing football again? Because lately they've been a real suckfest!

June 11, 2008  01:41 PM ET

Schools have been steeling kids out of south Florida for years, so obviously they aren't doing a very good job.

Well as always when you have been dominated for the majority of your life by your competition, you kinda have a tendacy to hate them in anyway possible. Ain't that right :TRUTH, GARIBOY, & GATORBEANCOUNTER!! And by the way you can't judge a Head Coach by his 1st year as to how his carrer will be. Shannon's only mistake in my opinion was hiring his DB coach as the DEF COOR. with no experience (now employed elsewhere after 1yr). Losing 3 close games by the margins of 6, 3, & 3, then not being able to make adjustments in other games. Now enter Shannon doing a Bobby Bowden to try and call the defense w/ headsets on to try to clean up the mistakes, but too late. Now w/ a DEF COOR w/ 28 yrs as a DC and 35 yrs coaching, not to mention a better QB. What a difference a year makes when the coach could have easily been bowl eligible in his 1st year. By the way GATORBEANCOUNTER let's see if you will be saying the same thing when SEPT 6th is here say around 11pm postgame

June 11, 2008  02:41 PM ET

FOXX...for the record I don't hate the "U." Not quite sure how you came to that conclusion.

June 11, 2008  03:05 PM ET

I don't know why there is such an issue about recruiting in your back yard. Some experts would say that the Tri County area is so enrich with talented players that it may change a program within a two year span. One important scenario is that players want to play right away. FSU and Florida Gators were doing well recruiting South Florida. Now things have changed with Randy Shannon because a lot players relate and feel comfortable with him as there coach. Former players who have played in the NFL contribute to the cause. I compliment the coach on his hard work, it will pay off very soon.

FOXX:

In honor of your namesake...YOU BIG DUMMY!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT make any assumptions about me. I certainly am not at fault because Shannon was a poor choice as head coach, made by a poor choice of school president. You are dismissed.

June 11, 2008  05:37 PM ET

These coached do know that kids play football in the other 49 states, don't they?

June 11, 2008  06:39 PM ET

THUG U will continue to be mediocre because they're players have discipinary problems, and they are , in fact THUG U

June 11, 2008  06:41 PM ET

P.S. Shalala is a MORON, She should keep her slimy hands out of the football making decision, like hiring a head coach!
What the HELL does she know about picking a head coach. Other than all she wants to do is make the politically correct decision, just because its PC, not because its the right decision.
Women and football do not mix. Especially spineless liberal women.
