The day after the Bears severed ties with Cedric Benson, his lawyer maintained that a videotape would prove his client's innocence, the Bears no doubt continued to prepare for the Matt Forte era and free-agent running back Kevin Jones continued to wait for a call. Jones, a former first-round pick of the Lions, hopes to hear from the Bears, according to a source close to the player.

ohhh yeah go from a bust to an injury waiting to happen. who is making the decisions there? between the Bears and the Bulls it's a wonder the entire city of Chicago is not on suicide watch.

June 11, 2008  06:24 AM ET

Jones isn't a bad back if he is healthy. Problem for Chicago might be the O-line.

June 11, 2008  07:03 AM ET

Jones and Alexander could both be options to spell the rookie this season as he learns the ropes.

June 11, 2008  07:07 AM ET

Actually the Oline has gotten a lot better with LT Chris Williams and John Tait moving to RT.

(Jones) "Call me....555-HURT". Peterson can show Forte the ropes. When you put Wolfe in the mix you have to believe that the Bears will be alright. The O line has improved and Forte looks focused. I was screaming for the out right release of Benson before all of his troubles. I am glad he is gone. Just put him on the shelf with the rest of the RB busts that have been in Chicago since Payton.

We really don't need Kevin Jones! If we going to make a pickup it should be Travis Henry. He got a basketball team to take care of.

June 11, 2008  08:51 AM ET

Travis Henry wouldn't be bad to have around for a year. I worry that Jones is injury prone and Alexander is just plain finished. Alexander has that Benson like expolsiveness through the line. They need to stay away from him.

June 11, 2008  09:58 AM ET

Big Bad Bears Backer: Really? JONES is too injury prone yet Henry wouldn't be bad? I take Alexander for a year over signing Henry, and taking a risk on Jones could pay huge dividends. We already made the mistake of sticking w/ Benson for too long, and drafting Forte too early, why the hell not take another chance?

I'm sure a few backs will be looked at before the season starts.... what did Cedric Benson get his degree in? The bone-head.

Big Bad Bears Backer

Peterson is not "featured" back caliber and Wolfe is essentially a flea. (The Bears need to get him outside if they're going to play him because he's useless hitting the line.) Forte may turn out, but bringing Jones and/or Alexander into camp on a conditional contract isn't a bad move. You can always cut 'em. Right now though, things do not look so rosy for the Bears backfield - and the line won't be doing them any favors this year.

Why would we get rid of one nightmare just so we could inherit another? If Angelo is serious about character, then he wouldn't touch Henry with a 10 foot pole. Bring Alexander in on a short term, incentives laden contract. Although I wouldn't protest bringing in LaMont Jordan. He's now expendable for the Raiders, and has some experience. Jones, I'll admit not knowing much of. I know that he has injury issues. Overall, this crop of FAs isn't great at all.

June 11, 2008  11:32 AM ET

Jones = Not bad, just not my choice.
Alexander = agree with Big Bad Bears Backer, he's not an upgrade from Benson anymore.
Henry = Seriously??? He'd be worse to have around then Tank or Benson. BAD IDEA!

I'd try to work out a deal with the Raiders for one of their guys.

June 11, 2008  11:48 AM ET

Ashman,

I agree with you. Alexander is about done if not done, Bears would be better of with a young back field than him. And why would you bring a troubled guy like henry to replace a lower character guy like Benson. Plus most denver backs do nothing once they leave denver. Jones is just a health concern, I would look his way first or just Trade for one of the talented backs of the Raiders.

June 11, 2008  11:50 AM ET

We should only take Travis Henry if he is willing to Castrate himself. But in all seriousness. Travis Henry is a little like Thomas Jones. Runs hard hits the hole with explosiveness. That is what MR. Ced was lacking.

June 11, 2008  11:54 AM ET

Travis will hit any hole available to him, thats been proven. But the Bears do need a veteran back, given the lack of consistent play at QB.

June 11, 2008  12:13 PM ET

Cedric had every opportunity to become the starter for the Bears. He lost his rookie season by holding out for more money. He was unprepared by the time he got signed and pretty much lost that year. Then he looked decent when paired with Jones in helping the Bears get to the Super Bowl. Last season without Jones he struggled to carry the load and then this offseason when he should have focused only on improving he went out and put himslef in not one but two bad situations that led to his run in with law. I know he may be completely innocent but a smart person would never have risked it all and put himself in these situations.

June 11, 2008  12:14 PM ET

As for Jones, I don't think he goes to Chicago to be anything more then a backup. The Bears can use Forte and Peterson in a two back attack. If Jones is healthy and shows flashes of his old self from college then maybe use him as the second back in the two back system. But obviously the future is Forte.

June 11, 2008  12:22 PM ET

With all the bad press surrounding this team they can definately use a back like Shaun Alexander for one season. It wouldn't be a gamble. If he works out, the bears got him for cheap; if he doesn't work out cut him. He can be a mentor and great locker room presence for this team. This is pretty much a one year fix so that Forte and Wolfe can develope and eventually be the future of the Bears backfield. Jones and Henery are little younger and will be expecting a large contract after one productive season and that will bring chaous to this team next season. Bring in a proven veteran for a season and move on from there.
