Smoltz's future remains uncertain

05:36 AM ET 06.11 | If the Braves were hoping to find an easy solution within John Smoltz's damaged right shoulder, that wish went unanswered Tuesday. The Atlanta ace has a damaged labrum, a tricky injury even to a young pitcher but a serious complication for a 41-year-old with 3,395 innings of career work. If his future remains unclear, this was far worse than an easily treatable condition Smoltz had hoped for. But a significant deterioration of the labrum for an older pitcher poses a more complicated setback. While Smoltz has shown extraordinary resiliency over his career in recovering from four elbow surgeries over a six-year period, this is not a comparable situation.

June 11, 2008  06:21 AM ET

One of the best ever.

June 11, 2008  06:57 AM ET

No way, his career ain't over. He threw 95mph with all that damage.

June 11, 2008  07:03 AM ET

We all know that you're a 'gamer' Smoltzie, but take it easy on the old shoulder......there is definitely life after baseball. In other news......d-a-m-n our lousy road record.

I want to believe that Smotlz will come back, but I will not be upset if he does retire. At one point, you have to think of what life will be like after the game. Smoltz has given more to this team than anyone I can think of and I wish him nothing but the best.

Its actually not up in the air. Its done.

Just curious why this guy always got a pass as not being injury risk when guys with less problems are considered that way?

June 11, 2008  09:27 AM ET

Great guy, great pitcher and a great career. Hopefully he'll do what's best for HIM and retire if he just can't keep going.

June 11, 2008  10:19 AM ET

June 11, 2008  10:23 AM ET

I have to believe that if he wants to come back that he could.

June 11, 2008  10:35 AM ET

One of the greatest we will see. And a gentlemen all the way.

June 11, 2008  11:25 AM ET

Smotlz is a good egg!

June 11, 2008  11:33 AM ET

Perogies on the house!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

June 11, 2008  12:25 PM ET

He should go ahead and hang it up. I hate to see his career end this way but he doesn't deserve to have to fight his way back from this.

valid point. i think the answer is that he never complained, pitched through it, and didn't fail to live up to his potential due to injuries. guys who fight injuries on their way to successful careers are called warriors, gamers, etc. guys whose injuries derail their careers are often called soft. not fair, but it happens.

True that. You got to tip your hat to a guy who gave up those seasons when he came out of the bullpen and saved games for the team.

June 11, 2008  04:56 PM ET

so let me get this straight. Hampton on the DL...again...Smoltz on the DL...again... Juerggens or whatever the F his name is now going to miss a start because of a sprained ankle and Glavine is on the DL with a elbow strain??? What the F are you people drinking in the Peach State. I guess this is Karma kickin ya in the tail for an easy Sugar Bowl game??

June 11, 2008  05:27 PM ET

Aren't all of our futures uncertain when you get down to it?

June 11, 2008  06:02 PM ET

knowing John, he will do his BEST at coming back. If only in the bullpen a few more years. Either way, Atlanta owes him BIG...
