Why Kings fired Crawford

The Kings quietly cut Marc Crawford loose Tuesday, two years and one month after saying they liked his "juice," General Manager Dean Lombardi's description of the energy Crawford displayed during his job interview. Crawford wasn't going to get them remotely close to contending for the Stanley Cup, not with his habitual scalding criticism of the kids who are becoming the core of this team and will make up an even greater chunk of the Kings' roster and soul next season. The Kings had more hope than skill and Crawford couldn't function under those circumstances, couldn't be patient with kids who were learning and making mistakes and needed a teacher more than they needed a screamer who demanded more than they were capable of delivering.

Maybe Crawford and Patrick Roy could team up as coaches for the American Gladiators on TV

I guees you have to have a certificate in early childhood education to coach these days. Did he make the youngins cry? Boy, Dick Irvin Sr. and Eddie Shore must be spinning in their graves.

Easy POP...Lets remember this is the same fool that decided Bourgue was a better choice than the Greatest goal scorer of all-time to use as his top 5 shoot-out candidates with everything on the line for Gold.
Never had much use for Crawford after that & figured the Hockey Gods would catch up to him. Especially in L.A!

Crawford's time has passed....I hope he doesn't get recycled somewhere else.

Something happen to Crawford in between his days as the Avs coach and now. His career seems to have fallen off the tracks and he can't get it back on.

I think he needs some time away from the game to recharge and refocus.

Baun-ded

HAHAHA.... As a card carrying hater of such stuff (shootouts AND pros at the Limpics) I laughed my bum off at that. I wasn't watching of course but I read all about it in the "Sunday papers"....

Crawford is the kind of coach wh porves that anybody can coach a great, stacked team to a big win. I like to think of him as a the Barry Switzer of the NHL.

Agreed. I always thought of him to be a tad overrated.

Gretzky's forte was not breakaways. He blew more than he made.

Limpic love-in Gold means nothing. No hate invlolved. More like an all star game. Too many teammates on the other guys.

1972 was the real McCoy. Cross pollination was non existant. I don't even think Vaclav Nedomansky was over here yet. Maybe in the WHA?

Actually, bostongm, Hartley had Hejduk, Tanguay, Drury, Bourque and Blake in '01. Crawford's roster for the '96 Cup was Roy, Sakic, Forsberg, Foote, Keane, Lemieux, Kamenski, Ozolinsh, etc. Still stacked, no doubt, but the Young Guns came in a couple years later.

No biggie. Just double proof that a less-than-mediocre coach can take a stacked team to a title. (Do the names Phil Jackson or Mike Shanahan ring a bell?)

June 11, 2008  05:54 PM ET

Phil Jackson a less-than-mediocre coach? WOW!!

June 11, 2008  08:12 PM ET

Very informative article. I hadn't previously heard that the Kings had a bunch of little 'kids' on their team. No wonder they finished in the toilet. The poor little guys probably just needed some milk and cookies and missed their mommies.
