Cliff Fletcher will remain the Toronto Maple Leafs' interim general manager for the entire 2008-09 NHL season, according to a member of the search committee for the new GM. The Leafs do not expect to hire a new GM until the summer of 2009 because that is when the contracts of several of the top NHL general managers expire.

Just keepin' the seat warm for Burkey.

June 12, 2008  09:14 AM ET

Yep...pretty much Melvil...I agree.

June 12, 2008  09:22 AM ET

Well, I don't think anybody else needs to comment then. We are in fact Fannation's Leaf authority.

My immediate reaction was "wait for the haters", but I think you're safe, the Leaf bashing seems to have been replaced by disdain for the Pens lately ......

Ahhhh but it's still early my friend. Give it time, there's usually one troll who'll pop by to spread hate.

Well, you know what they say: There's nothing more permanent than something temporary!

June 12, 2008  10:02 AM ET

Well...Oilers...Didn't you read Mel's comment...
So what are you doing making a comment...LOL

Of course...having said that, I'm sure we'll be saturated and hear from the 2 Bruin fans that frequent this site at some point.
Oh yeah...make that one...gocan changed his avatar back....hahahaha

June 12, 2008  10:07 AM ET

BTW to change the subject momentraily, Ronnie Wilson is going to piss A LOT of media people off in T.O...and vice-versa me thinks.

June 12, 2008  10:14 AM ET

Piss*ing is what Wilson does best!

June 12, 2008  10:20 AM ET

Not surprised by this move but it's still a clear signal that Burke is still the man they want to be the next GM for the Leafs. With 1 year left on his deal in Anaheim and an unsigned extension on the table we in Leaf Nation will just have to wait. Which we are good at... 40 years and counting since the last Leaf Cup Parade down Yonge Street!

June 12, 2008  11:51 AM ET

bostongm - Wilson is a dooche-bag for sure, but he's a heck of a coach. And if he turns T.O around, then he'll be favourtie dooche in all the land.

And that part where he pulled out his Canadian passport at the news conference killed me. You go get em Ronnie!

June 12, 2008  11:52 AM ET

*And if he turns T.O around, he'll be MY favourite dooche in all the land.

June 12, 2008  02:39 PM ET

Uncle Cliff -

1) Cut Tucker, Raycroft.
2) Trade Kaberle and Kubina for younger talent, draft picks.
3) DO NOT re-sign Sundin.
4) Please try to move McCabe and his ridiculous salary for, maybe, well, just get rid of him.
5) Be patient with the draft! Let the kids develop to finally have a nucleus of twenty-somethings in a couple of years.
6) Spend the BIG money on scouting and player development, like the Wings. Increase your scouting department exponentially and reap the profits wiesly, not depend on free agents and never-beens.

Yours faithfully,

Sucker

We have waited 40+ years. We won't mond waiting a few more if you choose sanity over quick fixes, which hae been the Leafs path forever and more.

I remember posting a few months ago that ole Cliffy would still be here in the fall. Got quite ripped from a few certain leaf fans too....gotta admit the Leafs ARE entertaining...its just not suppose to be at this time of year.

June 12, 2008  03:02 PM ET

Hahaha I Knew Petey would be around today to give his "I told you so"

I don't think I ripped you Pete, in fact I thought we had a pretty good discussion over it. Anyways to say that the GM landscape was baron is an understatement. I believe my point was that they would find their name GM at some point - I guess it'll be next year with Burke.

I still don't understand why you dislike the Leafs so much, it seems every time you comment it's a shot at them.

June 12, 2008  03:29 PM ET

i dont really "dislike" the Leafs per say....im in sw ont so im very exposed to them.I stick with my Rangers thick and thin as you know. I guess i just find a lot of my leaf fan friends are like jays fans...bandwagon (i dint say you or all). Plus as an outsider ya gotta admit..it is pretty fixin funny.

June 12, 2008  04:00 PM ET

You in SW Ont? Damn, I never knew that, I guess I just assumed you were from around New York seeing as you are a Rangers fan..my bad. I understand where your coming from, bandwagon fans annoy me...you should see how many of my former Leaf fan friends jumped ship over to Ottawa once they started winning.

And oh yah, Leaf fan or not, it does get pretty comical at times.

June 12, 2008  04:49 PM ET

Thanx for your understanding....and i'll never cheer for Ottawa...too many uhhh...like vancouver...lets just call them softies.

Yours faithfully,
This of course, is ideal, and would seem logical for EVERYONE to do. But very few do. As a Yankee and Rangers fan, my fellow fans want TO WIN NOW!!!

June 12, 2008  11:35 PM ET

Yeah...I figured we'd see Peter too with his "I told you so."
Regardless...bandwagoners aside...the Leafs still have the largest fan base of any team in the NHL...I think that is what seems to bug a lot of people...
But Peter...The Rangers have been right up there if you want to discuss Ringly Brothers....so.
