Another Hoosier wants out

Jordan Crawford informed Indiana Wednesday that he will not return. That makes 12 players who started the 2007-08 season with the Hoosiers who are no longer with the team. Tom Crean said last week he's continuing to recruit players for the coming season but won't offer scholarships merely to add bodies. With 11 scholarship players lined up for the 2009-10 season, Crean likely will not add more than one scholarship player to the current class. There are seven scholarship players for next season. Kyle Taber, a former walk-on who was put on scholarship for the first time last season as a junior, is the leading returning scorer at 1.3 points per game.

first ( who cares)

June 12, 2008  08:58 AM ET

I have to agree with cecil0124 on this one. Who cares? Tom Crean is going to have a hard first season but he will be fine in the long run.

June 12, 2008  10:06 AM ET

I would like to know where he goes...Detroit Mercy? I did see this coming though, If we can just get Negedu.

June 12, 2008  10:29 AM ET

I agree....Crean will be fine at IU in the long run......it's just going to be tough for a year or two....

June 12, 2008  10:45 AM ET

I've heard of starting from scratch but WOW!

June 12, 2008  11:04 AM ET

its gonna be ugly in indiana for a while. glad you're not my team

June 12, 2008  11:09 AM ET

I don't see the logic in the transfer. He was gonna be the man on the team...A sophomore go to guy, I don't think he would have carried them that far, but he could have showed his skills. Now he will sit a year.

June 12, 2008  11:10 AM ET

It is going to be a very long season at Indiana but at least this gives Crean a chance to do it with his own players and prove that he is good coach.

June 12, 2008  11:13 AM ET

Jordan you would look real good in a PC uniform - Keno Davis

June 12, 2008  12:04 PM ET

This will be good for IU. Just wait and watch...

sign that your program is slipping: this many players have left

June 12, 2008  01:58 PM ET

Yes it has slipped, but it still has the most tradition out of any program not. UCLA is up there, but Indiana basketball is in its own class. They will be able to recover with Crean calling the shots. The H.S. talent from the last 5 years, that has left the state is sickening to think about. There should be two to three more banners in the rafters if they would have stayed. The good thing is, Indiana is still producing top tier HS talent. Watch out.

June 12, 2008  02:35 PM ET

I don't care either...the first coach should have followed the rules in the first place and none of this would have happened!!!

June 12, 2008  02:59 PM ET

If you don't care, then why take time to read, let alone take the time to tell the blog u don't care?!

What CLASS is that? An old superpower that has yet to recapture it's glory? To say "Indiana" in the same breath as "UCLA" is blasphemy. No Final Fours since Mike Davis, and before that, if I'm not mistaken, 1987.

June 12, 2008  04:24 PM ET

Why don't you give IU a little time to recover from the Knight era? What did UCLA do when Wooden left? IU actually got to the final 4 the year Knight left. UCLA has gotten to the final four these past years because they receive possibly the easiest seeding in the tourney...prolly a biased selection committee. Anyone will tell you that when you walk into Assembly Hall, it sends chills up your spine. I believe ex-UCLA coach Lavin said it also. I am not saying UCLA doesn't have amazing tradition, but if I recall correctly the 80's and 90's weren't the best of years for UCLA(minus 1995). IU also made it to the fianl 4 in 1993.

First of all, don't ever quote Lavin again. The worst coach ever in the history of UCLA basketball. He won on talent alone and everyone (with the exception of you?) knows this. Secondly, what you said about UCLA's seedings over the years is ridiculous. Finally, you initially posted that IU is in a class by itself. I don't think so, I'd easily put them in the same class as UNC, Duke, Louisville (whom I like), Michigan St., North Carolina St., UConn, etc... Teams that have won more than one 'ship but less than five. Then, going up in class, you have to put Kentucky, who has won more than five but less than 10. At the top, all alone with 11 'ships, is UCLA. They ONLY hang 'ships in Pauley Pavillion and that's why Howland's seat is a little warm in Westwood.

June 12, 2008  06:59 PM ET

Well I believe i said tradition, not national titles. There a lot of factors that play into it. UCLA had a great dynasty and they have great tradition, but I don't feel its the same as IU. IU has had many great teams over the years, not in just one span. Titles in the 40's, 50's, 70's, 80's...Many other final four apperances. That builds a greater tradition in a great basketball state.

June 12, 2008  09:52 PM ET

Since when is Howland on the "warm" seat? Thats insane. He is taking us to the most successful era in UCLA hoops since Wooden. Even the Wizard himself had to get to the final 4 a handful of times before he finally won it all.

June 12, 2008  10:18 PM ET

Sad, but necessary , better to start completely over. It will not take long. It is not like football where you need 22 starters and some depth.
Five top recruits will get you there. The tradition is so strong, and the opportunity is there to play right away against top competition.
