Ref: FBI inquired about Bavetta

The FBI has made inquiries about NBA referee Dick Bavetta, according to a former NBA referee who was interviewed by federal agents last year. Hue Hollins, who retired in 2003 and has been outspoken about the NBA's treatment of referees, said he met for about an hour with two agents from New York before last season. In addition to asking questions about Tim Donaghy, Hollins said the agents inquired extensively about Bavetta. They asked if he ever noticed that Bavetta "was making sure that the home team would win, and I told them I had no idea because I didn't work with him a lot." Hollins said the agents did not ask about a specific team, game or series and did not ask about Game 6 in 2002. "They were very specific about their questioning, as though they had heard something," Hollins said. "They knew exactly what they were going after."

Bring em all to Justice!

Spurs should have 9 rings. Thanks refs.

June 12, 2008  07:25 AM ET

they should be going after him for racing Barkley on national T.V. how old is this guy? bet he has fond memories of when they used peach baskets for rims.

June 12, 2008  07:51 AM ET

leave him alone, he only has 4 years left on this earth

chewbacca the spurs have been beneficiaries of these horrible refs. their title count is ALREADY inflated because of them.

the spurs invented the ref culture everyone hates today with the flopping and the constant hum of the whining.

Gr8 Chewbacca | 06/12/08, 07:15 AM

sounds like a fair number

June 12, 2008  08:28 AM ET

Wow!! what a mess! instead of tryin to sweep this fiasco under the rug, stern better get a grasp of this situation. the league's integrity has come under some serious fire.........truthful or not!

June 12, 2008  08:31 AM ET

I think 6 or 7 is about the right number of rings the Spurs would have, if the refs had been calling things fairly.

June 12, 2008  08:52 AM ET

I don't want to believe anything that Donaghy says. But I also didn't want to believe anything that Canseco said either and a whole lot of that ended up being true.

June 12, 2008  09:12 AM ET

Donaghey may be trying to just save his ****, but the FBI wouldn't want to look like jokes for believing an idiot, so stern and company better be concerned if they are listening and starting to question others.

June 12, 2008  09:22 AM ET

Stern is the owners guy. The last thing he wants to do is his job. He may be forced to. The NBA has no business being the sole judge and evaluator of referees. An outside group is needed, and has been needed for a long long time..you cannot police yourselves. Not possible.

June 12, 2008  09:28 AM ET

The NBA is innocent.

Let me guess...Bavetta is probably one of the refs officiating tonight's finals game. Doesn't anyone else see the timing of these crazy allegations? Donaghy is trying to make the most damage to the NBA's credibility and what better way than to raise "questions" during one of the best and most storied teams matchups in the finals.

If the Lakers win, Celtics fans will claim the officials made it happen. If the Celtics win, Lakers fans will question it and say the league was trying to give the "good guy" (KG) a championship in order to regain the fans trust.

Either way, it's all a ploy by Donaghy to get a reduced sentence. If the sentencing judge thinks he has done some good by "outing" others in the league, he'll be seeing just like an informant when they help bring down a huge player. As a fan of basketball, I'm disappointed that it puts the integrity of the game into question but if we've also gotta take it for what it's worth and consider the source...the desperate source trying to stay out of prison.

June 12, 2008  09:49 AM ET

Investigate the OFFICIALS and david stern, this is going to be a big problem if all the officials are corrupt.

June 12, 2008  09:51 AM ET

Spurs should have 9 rings. Thanks refs.

Gr8 Chewbacca | 06/12/08, 07:15 AM

yeah right...tim duncan and ginobili have gotten more phantom calls than anyone else...now lets try and keep our focus on the LAKERS!

June 12, 2008  09:55 AM ET

The NBA needs Vince McMahon to run the show properly.

The league is a joke. Stern and Company have run the league according to revenue, pushing teams into the spotlight that can sell the sport. Ever since the days of Magic/Bird to Air Jordan and now to Lebron World.

At least in the WWE everyone knows the outcome is fake and accepts it.

June 12, 2008  10:00 AM ET

open up the flood gates....this is a bigger problem than strn is willing to admit....the FBI does not investigate foolishness....over the years there has been alot of shaky things that have happened during games...if you cant criticose the officials...and you cant even talk to thwm about why on some nights does paul pierce get every call and on other nights he gets none?...this will explode just like the cancesco book did...only this is worse because people believe it...

EastCoastJesse,

Sorry man, I have to disagree. Donaghy is a dirtbag, no argument. But I actually believe the guy. Everyone said the same thing a few years back when Jose Canseco (another dirt bag) came clean about steroids. I remember watching guys (liars) like Raffy Palmeiro, Mark McGwire before Congress and taking their side. But as time went on, the only thing that was proven was that Canseco was right, and the 'roid problem was way worse than any casual fan believed.

I believe this is going to turn into a HUGE problem for the NBA. A can of worms has been opened here, with real evidence (check the stats on some crucial playoff games in the recent past, how home teasms or marquee clubs get preferential treatment and it HAS to concern us as fans.) Don't be naive.
