Dumars talking Pistons trades

Pistons president Joe Dumars knew exactly what he was doing when he told the world that he would listen to trade offers for all of his core players. He likened it to opening Pandora's Box. "Listen, I knew once I said that last week the phones would start ringing and I knew following that the rumors would start," he said. "And I will say this, we aren't talking to teams about their second- and third-best players. My point has been, if I am going to put these types of guys (the Pistons' five starters) on the market, don't waste your time talking to me about guys you don't like." Dumars said that he has talked to at least 10 teams, but nothing was imminent. Some of the rumors that have been floated (namely regarding Carmelo Anthony) have been about teams he hasn't even talked to yet.

Since he's going to be making trades, he needs to have a good Poker Face.
The picture shows that he's been practicing it and close to perfecting it.

They should have a TV show called "Sports GM's After Dark", in the mold of "Poker After Dark".
In this TV show, managers from various teams gather and discuss possible trade options. Or, instead of the managers themselves, have former players from the teams pretend to play the role of GM. They could even create a deck of cards, with a card for each player in the NBA, and exchange them among each other to simulate possible trades. There would be additional cards to represent draft picks, and the chips could signify the additional exchange of cash.
The result would be a visualization and simulation of what would be possible in the real world of the league.
The GM's can take cues and then do the deals in real life.

Joe has done a real good job in Detroit-
& he continues to be a SOLID GM.....

No way is he just going to have a fire-sale-

Sounds like he is trying to tell the Knicks to stop call him 18 times a day.

June 12, 2008  09:32 AM ET

He has to have a fire sale ... he has publicly said this team doesnt have enough heart to win it all. Who will stay and play for him? He has alienated 95% of the roster.

first Jay L sorry poker is not a sport, it's a game like monopoly or checkers. second unless it's a big name youngster Dumars will be hesitant to pull the trigger. he wants to get younger and stay in contention.

I agree. He said that when they lost this year he felt a feeling of contentment leaving the arena because he "knew what [he] was going to do".

He's given up on the current group and wants new, younger blood. But he still want's championship caliber players. I don't think he'll pull off a blockbuster, but he may just bust the block.

If I was the Spurs GM, I would explore the possibility of acquiring Rasheed or Prince.

It'll be hard to trade for Prince since SA has nothing to give in return, but the Pistons will get rid of Rasheed for peanuts.

There's plenty of peanuts in the south.

June 12, 2008  11:03 AM ET

come on joe go for melo...but dont trade rip

June 12, 2008  11:17 AM ET

I still say the proposed Carmelo trade sucks.

June 12, 2008  11:43 AM ET

I gotta believe there is a GREAT chance of seeing Michael Redd in a Pistons jersey... Bucks have needs, and with Hammond being the new GM, he is familiar with the Pisotns players that can fill those needs... just throwing it out there..

June 12, 2008  11:45 AM ET

^ What do others think about the prospects of Michael Redd? Gives us a new look and hungry player, and probably don't have to give up a ton. We can wait getting rid of Sheed when there is higher value for him (trade deadline) if Joe is serious about rebuilding the team.

June 12, 2008  11:52 AM ET

Smart idea Joe, dismantle your team. Trade Chauncey, Rasheed and Richard Hamilton and become a lottery-picking team for the next 10 years

June 12, 2008  11:53 AM ET

Redd gives you more in scoring than their current SG (Hamilton) but I think Stuckey is the future and maybe you package Wallace and Hamilton together to get a better big man.

June 12, 2008  11:57 AM ET

I agree with the new big guy, I would love to land a solid big, but it just seems like it might be harder to get done. If we can land a Brand, I would be ecstatic, but this could be enough a tweak to light a fire without disturbing the team too much if we cant get a big man.

June 12, 2008  12:04 PM ET

Brand would be a very good pickup but as you say I don't see the Clippers parting with him. Hamilton and Wallace are definitelt the most expendable for the Pistons. One player is definitely less likely to mess up the chemistry.

June 12, 2008  12:13 PM ET

Something will happen this Summer and change up the team because its been a few years since that title, and it was after a trade shook up the team for sheed.

June 12, 2008  12:20 PM ET

What do you think it would take to land Amare? Suns might be willing to grab a contract like Sheed's, they seem to hate going over the cap, this would allow them to stay under without a huge risk?

June 12, 2008  12:56 PM ET

I like Amare but no way the Suns trade him before the season. They will wait and see what they got next year with Shaq, Nash, and Amare. If they are out of it at the deadline then they may try to trade one of the big guys.
