Villareal may not loan Altidore

According to the Spanish daily Marca, Villarreal is considering not loaning Jozy Altidore to another club for his first season in Spain, which was being suggested in various reports the past week. Concerns over the fact that Altidore is set to miss a majority of pre-season training to play in the Olympics coupled with a desire to assure that Altidore has a smooth transition to Spain has Villarreal officials considering keeping him.

the news just gets better. I hope he is able to fight for a spot and get some minutes. Villareal is going to have SOOOO many games next year that if he fights and really shows his skills he could get some decent minutes in some League and early Copa Del Rey matches. (not sure how much they'd play him in Champion's League just yet)

Hope he has a smooth transition, gets some time and impresses.

I hope he gets time, then. I would have preferred to have seen him get loaned out to a team that would give him the most time on the pitch for the experience, though.

Villareal is gonna be playin alot of games this year...im sure he is gonna get a few starts...to give Rossi and such some rest.

Whether he's loaned or not his experience in Spain is going to turn him into something we've never seen on the USMNT, no doubt. Hopefully, by the time this year is over he will have bumped EJ out of the picture. We don't have time to fool around with EJ's fear of shooting and running at defenders.

I think Villareal should loan Altidore out for the first season, but they have the luxury of choice given the massive schedule this year. I do not believe they will loan him out, as they would like to see a quick return on the investment, but they have to pick and chose the stage carefully. They will have 38 league games, at least 6 champions league games and the King's Cup. Altidore is a capable player and could benefit from early starts against low-level clubs in the King's Cup and some bottom table opponents in La Liga. Benfica made a mistake playing Adu in the Champions League too early and I doubt Villa will make that error, unless the group is particularly favorable.

Look in the middle of the page - you'll see a small picture of a kid wearing a yellow jersey blowing kisses to the crowd.....;-)

FYI:

Villarreal president, Fernando Roig, welcomed the player before saying: ???Altidore will do the pre-season with us and then we will analyse the situation. We are delighted to have one of football???s finest prospects with us???.

At Villarreal he will get MINIMAL time. He should be praying for a transfer.

June 12, 2008  10:19 AM ET

If he looks OK in pre-season and they keep him I think he'll play more than we think. He won't start, but there's no guarantee he'd start at Huelva either although he'd have a better chance. If they are not satisfied with him in pre-season there's no reason not to loan him out to get some playing time.

June 12, 2008  11:47 AM ET

It'll be good for him to compete against Llorente, Nihat, Rossi, Tomasson and G.Franco. But he needs playing time, go to Recreativo or Getafe.

People say US can prodouce star like these guy but guess what. What we have is every genatrion of soccer star will get better.

Give him September-December practicing competting in practice with one of the better teams in Spain, let him get settled in the new country for a little, and get him some playing time against second and third tier opposition. Then, when the January transfer window opens, loan him out to a relegation-struggling club for six months and see what he can do with significant playing time.

Good point j11.

Give the guy a chance. Really, he's the first American to get into La Liga (I know about the few others before him). We're so used to the EPL and Ligue 1 standards that we've already loaned him out for playing time.
It's a different mentality in Spain, they didn't go after some college kid looking to bypass MLS for experience in Europe, they went for a superstar on the rise! The second place team on top of that!
Let's see how his preseason goes (he's in mid season form anyway)...some of the other big names may be heading to Recreativo instead.
All the best Jozy!

I have to agree with villarreal. why loan him out before you know how he is going to fit into the team and what his playing time will be.

Loan him if he doesnt push out the like of Tomasson and Nihat, it may take a season so what about Getafe
