Senators won't interview Tortorella

The Senators could have a new coach by the end of the week. Senators GM Bryan Murray has decided not to interview former Lightning coach John Tortorella, which means one of Bob Hartley, Craig Hartsburg or Peter DeBoer will likely be Ottawa's next bench boss. Sources say the Senators were concerned about how Tortorella's over-the-top tirades would affect the atmosphere in the dressing room.

Yes, because we all know the atmosphere right now is conducive to winning.

And I don't see why there's such a buzz with Deboer, I saw him on a radio station last week and he made it quite clear he intended on sticking with Kitchener.

Wasnt that Emery last year?

If the Senators are concerned about Tortorella's over-the-top tirades, they should be even more concerned about Bob Hartley's garbage tacticks and remove him from the list as well!

That dressing room is a mess, a tirade is what they need. Conference Finals two years ago, barely making tthe playoffs and out in the first round last season, this year do they even make the playoffs?

Durk...they should be able to grab the 8th spot...AHEAD of the Bruins.
Whatever it is that the Sens need to find...they had better find it quickly.

Ah just give him some valium and hire him !!!

June 12, 2008  10:38 AM ET

If the regular season had been a week longer, Ottawa wouldn't have made the playoffs. Yes Tortorella might get on the case of the underacheivers on that team, we can't have that!

June 12, 2008  10:51 AM ET

Clearly they have more issues than coaching but they need leadership now... make a decision and hold your breath.

The Senators need a coach who can deal with young players and instill team discipline. Ottawa is still has a pretty young core of players. I love how everyone is writing this team off. There is still a lot of talent on this team and I suspect Murray will make a few shrewd moves in free agency to shore up this roster. Tortorella isn't that great of a coach. He was just the beneficiary of a good team who peaked at the right time and a hot goalie, like many teams who have made the Stanley Cup finals in the last few years. Without the Stanley Cup win he would have been fired 2 seasons ago.

WWow...a coach getting on no-shows....now there's a concept!

June 12, 2008  11:29 AM ET

Murray is just scared that Torts will do what he is brought in to do, and end up takign his job! Since he has become General Manager, how many cups????

My point exactly! WHy bring in a winning coach? he wants someone under him who he can fire again, so it looks like he has everything under control! Murray is a bum

Listen Brain-ded...the B's will make the play-offs next season. They garnered 94 points despite racking up 364 man-games lost to injury. 100 points is not out of the question for my B's next season.
Your team on the other hand...................i wouldnt be surprised if they finished dead last in the entire NHL next season. Since Wilson is on for 4 seasons......you know he's part of a developmental process. As they should....thats the right path to take.

The last thing I want to see in Tin Man Territory is a decent coach.

Many here will tell you that the great Dany Heatley can carry any team on his own.

June 12, 2008  12:48 PM ET

If they are smart they will hire Craig Hartsburg if their dumb they hire Bob Hartley ... You heard it here 1st!

June 12, 2008  01:00 PM ET

I can already imagine a Tortorella-Emery fight. that'd be interesting

LOL

June 12, 2008  02:35 PM ET

That is funny...........

June 12, 2008  02:43 PM ET

Tortorella is exactly what the skirts in the Sens dressing room need. Spezza, Heatley and Alfie need a kick in the rear to get more aggressive in their play, and the team toughness is laughable. Murray is afraid of losing power by hiring a proven coach. Ever wonder why all of his hires have been guys on the fringe, with marginal NHL experience/success? He isn't about to lose a battle over power by bringing in a guy who walks his own walk, and that is Tortorella to a tee.

joec...well said, sir.

Alfredson is complete Eurotrash.

And right joec, god forbid they hire a coach who is capable of barking orders and putting players in their place. Maybe they should hire Barry Melrose?
