Paterno not hurting recruiting

Joe Paterno is in the last year of his contract. The university will not give him an extension, saying it's unnecessary, but will evaluate his future following the 2008 season. It's not a scenario one would imagine benefits recruiting, and it has had many a Penn State watcher predicting doomsday. But with recruiting for the 2009 class in full swing, the Lions have been surprisingly active participants, already bagging 12 oral commitments. The Inquirer spoke to more than two dozen recruits to whom Penn State has offered scholarships. Some have accepted, others have committed elsewhere, and some are still undecided. But a majority, whether they meant it or not, have said that the "Paterno situation" has not influenced, or will not influence, their decision. And yet, some have voiced their concerns. When Terrelle Pryor, last year's No. 1 quarterback recruit, said he eliminated Penn State before selecting Ohio State because Penn State didn't have a succession plan in place, the sting was sharp.

WOW! I didn't realize Paterno was still alive.

The likelihood of Greg Schiano at Penn State in 2009 is helping recruiting. Schiano is a master recruiter at Rutgers right now and at Penn State (where he'll be) at the same time. Amazing.

June 12, 2008  07:30 AM ET

If you put some shades on him, you could film "Weekend at Bernie's 3".

June 12, 2008  09:14 AM ET

Keith, seriously, give it up. Schiano's not leaving.

June 12, 2008  09:55 AM ET

The only way I see Schiano leaving is if they change the team name to the Nittany Schiano's. Or Greg State.

Weapon,

Or if PSU offers to get him a cooler helicopter!

June 12, 2008  10:10 AM ET

The most significant thing that is hurting PSU recruiting is JAY PATERNO.

Larry Johnson is actually the one recruiting the guys PSU is getting, but he's not landing superb recruits. Check any top 100 or 150 recruit board and PSU maybe gets - 1? Go back 5, 10 years and it's the same deal. Yea, there are always going to be 20 guys who go to PSU based on the name of the school alone. Top 100 guys go to schools with coaches and programs that are truly capable of winning a national championship. Penn State isn't recruiting these guys. Why? Because deep down, no one believes PSU will win a national title. They can't even get out of the Big 10 season without losing to OSU and Michigan!

June 12, 2008  11:18 AM ET

How can he hurt recruiting? He doesn't do any of it. I don't think Joe has left PA since 1978

June 12, 2008  11:37 AM ET

he's not... why couldnt he land the top qb from his state and in the country .. mr . pryor.. however, penn st. will always have a solid team and recruitment regardless

June 12, 2008  01:27 PM ET

The reason PSU didn't get Terrell Pryor is because JoePa kept sending telegrams to Richard Pryor to see if he wanted to go to Crappy Valley and got mad when he wouldn't return his telegrams!!!

June 12, 2008  07:03 PM ET

Why dont you people give JoePa the respect that he deserves. He knows more about football than all of us combined. He has done so much for college football and yet you people bash him like hes some old fool.

mikeinpittsburgh,

Are you serious, i dont even know where to start. Do you think PSU is just some second league football team. And if you have looked at our recruting. 2009 alone is looking good with already one 5-star recruit, two 4-star recruits, and plenty of 3-star recruits and we still have 8 months or however long to go. Maybe your talking about 2008, we finished like 40th nationally in recruiting but we got what we needed to get. Lets go back before that, in the years 2002-2006, two recruiting classes that finished 4th and 6th in the nation. Besides that, 28th, 12th, 16th, and one bad year of 50th, That sounds alright to me, not as bad as the bashing you gave us.

And whats wrong with our program, We have nothing wrong with our program. We have great coaches, great fans, great stadium, great tradition, biggest alumni association in the world, we have great everything.
JoePa has won 2 Nat Championships. And do you realize that he has had 4 undefeated sesons including wins in major bowl games but was not granted a National Championship.

June 12, 2008  07:06 PM ET

in any of those 4 years.

Give JoePa and PSU the respect they deserve.

June 12, 2008  07:52 PM ET

Last I checked, Michigan had the biggest alumni association in the world

June 12, 2008  08:09 PM ET

Penn State has the biggest paying alumni association

June 12, 2008  08:12 PM ET

Excuse me, Penn State has the largest dues-paying alumni association in the world

June 12, 2008  08:13 PM ET

"As the world's largest dues-paying alumni association with more than 159,000 members, the Penn State Alumni Association connects alumni to the University and to each other, provides valuable benefits to members and supports the University's mission of teaching, research and service."

(Quote from PSU Alum Assoc Website)

And, this season, Beaver Stadium is now the "Biggest" in the country, as Mchigan's Big House had to reduce capacity in order to provide more handicapped seating. (Of course, once its new expansion is complete, the Big House will again become the "Biggest")

WE ARE....PENN STATE!!!

June 12, 2008  10:11 PM ET

9-4. 9-4. 11-1. 4-7. 3-9. 9-4. PSU-FAN, if those are the records of teams with good recruiting, I'd hate to see bad recruiting! Beat Michigan and OSU in the same year and win the Big 10, than you can talk about respecting PSU as a program. Right now I could name you 40 teams with 9-4 records, only the LSUs, OSUs, and USCs wouldn't be any of those teams! Penn State won two national titles in the '80s and the '94 team may or may not have deserved a share, but the fact remains that 20 years without a title for a program that preaches tradition and a "powerhouse" mentality is just way too long.

Give JoePa and PSU the respect they deserve.

The Lions have finished higher than 4th in the Big 10 one time in the last 7-8 years. Winning 8-9 games a year by beating 4 pastries at home and the rest, the dregs of the Big 10, is success to the PSU crowd.
