Woodson to sign Hawks offer

Hawks coach Mike Woodson said that he intends to sign a contract the team offered Thursday. The deal is for two years, according to two people familiar with the situation. Woodson's current deal expires June 30, as do the contracts of his entire staff. But after two weeks of evaluations, new Hawks general manager Rick Sund has decided to stick with Woodson. The decision to keep Woodson wraps up a strange affair that began with the February revelation that Sund's predecessor, Billy Knight, tried to fire Woodson at the trade deadline, a move that was rebuffed by Hawks ownership.

Big mistake by Hawk management! They fell for the "okey doke" with that appearance by default in the playoffs last year! Woodson is not the coach to lead this young team to potential! His losing record is an indication of his abilities! This is less a statement about Woodson than it is about the poor Hawks management team.......they're amateurs who don't have a clue!
My condolences to the Hawk fans!

Hard not to bring back the coach that got the Hawks into the playoffs for the first time in a long time.

June 13, 2008  08:06 AM ET

I'm not sure if he is a good coach though.

It is by no means a mistake to keep Mike Woodson. No coach is going to be any better than personnel he's given to work with. His record is NOT an indication of his abilities. He has never been given much of anything to work with. It is not his fault that his choice to draft Chris Paul was overruled. Nor is it his fault that he has an inept, ineffective, and incompetent front office. When he was given a group of players with the potential to win, he made the most of it. The Hawks hadn't been to the playoffs in 10 years. What was the previous coach's problem?

June 13, 2008  09:40 AM ET

Sorry Hllywd, Hawks record is indeed an indication of his skills. Hawks have probably lost more games in the 4th Q than any other team in the NBA the past 3-4 years. Poor rotation, horrible plays after timeouts, and most imp of all several locker room issues. Woodson has fought with Smith, Wright, Lue, Claxton, Johnson - atleast that's been reported of.
With Avery, Flip, Skiles on the market, this is another mind boggling pothole decision by Hawks. Woodson is NOT a head coach material, period!

If last years playoffs is your reason, then god help you. Inspite of the deadly East, Mind you, the hawks barely made it. In any case, expect a bad bad year for the hawks.

If you want CHANGE in Atlanta's record, you have to make changes. Keeping the same coach will not help your cause. Woodson's time should have been up sometime ago.

June 13, 2008  10:46 AM ET

Thank you ESPN for stating the obvious to Hllywd! I'm not sure what team he has been watching the last 4 years, but Woodson is NOT a good coach. I live in Atlanta and watched the 4th qtr losses in games that a GOOD coach would have won! Woodson struggles with substitutions and the timing thereof! He came to the Hawks as a supposedly "defensive guru" yet I've watched countless games that should have been won with a minimal amount of defensive pressure! Instead I watch a young, unguided, undisciplined team allow layups, wide open looks from known shooters, and an overall lackadaiscal effrot. All of that is a result of poor coaching! Chris Paul aside, the Hawks have assembled a team of young talented players who just needs direction! Direction that Woodson hasn't provided. In fact if you've watched him as I have, you can't help but notice the befuddled look on his face during close games! That look is because he's CLUELESS! When that team wins, it wins despite him, not because of him! So Hllywd come back when YOU get a clue! What will be the excuse next year when the record no better or worse than this years?

Coaches don't win games, players do. Woodson has been given a collection of NBA misfits and castoffs that probably couldn't have made it in the league anywhere else. When was the last time the Hawks had an All-Star? Was he suppose to win a ring?

June 13, 2008  11:09 AM ET

All I'm saying is you don't know whether he can do the job until you get the guy some tools.

June 13, 2008  11:12 AM ET

NBA "misfits and castoffs"? Of the current cast please explain who is what, I'm a little baffled by your statement?

June 13, 2008  11:18 AM ET

Woodson has been in Atlanta 4 years (I think) How many of the current cast have been there that long? This is a team of youngsters--the average age being 24 years old.

June 13, 2008  12:29 PM ET

The talent amassed on the Hawks currently should have won at least 15 to 20 more games than they won. Yes they are young, but if you will notice that is the trend in the NBA these days. Teams are trying to get younger and more athletic. The day of the "throw it into the big man" are gone replaced by "penetrate and dish to the wing"! Joe johnson granted is not a leader, but can score points with the best of them in the NBA. Bibby was a disappointment but should be an asset next year. They could use a legitmate "5" so Horsford can go to a more suitable "4"! Marvin Williams needs to put up or get out next year! Josh Smitrh is already an NBA star! Josh Childress is a good player coming into his own! Acie Law will be a force in this league barring any more injuries. Saleem Stoudamire has not been utilized for the shooter he is! Za za (whatever his name is) is averaging a low double-double with limited PT! The Hawks have talent they just need a good "teaching coach"! Put this team in Larry Brown's hands and they put up the aforementioned 15-20 games immediately per year!

June 13, 2008  12:50 PM ET

He is the first coach to take them to the playoffs in a DECADE
we are talking about the HAWKS
the hawks & clippers have been the WORST 2 franchises over this perioid
I don't care if hey made the playoffs 'in spite' of him.....
they MADE IT.

He DESERVES to come back

Hllywd

Not trying to get into a **** contest with you. But let me give you a concrete example of a young talent that Woodson had no clue what to do with...Ever heard of a certain Boris Diaw??? What did he accomplish in ATL? NADA. Infact he was just a throw in in the Joe Johnson deal. What happenned to Diaw in Mike D'Antoni's system? I hope you can atleast connect dots, if not analyze.
I will GUARENTEE you that the likes of Marvin, Acie, Al will become MUCH better players under a much more organized and meticulous coach.
The only resume Mike carries is he being an assistant under Coach Brown. And he was a good assistant, and can be one. NOT a head coach.
peace
