Why Wild will re-sign Gaborik

There seems little doubt that the Wild will end up re-signing star Marian Gaborik, who can become an unrestricted free agent after next season. Gaborik, 26, who was paid $6.5 million last season, is expected to seek the maximum 20 percent of the team's anticipated salary cap for next season, or about $10.8 million a year. The problem for him is that no other team is expected to provide him with a deal like that. And the Wild cannot afford to part with the face of the franchise. Gaborik is worth more in Minnesota than anywhere else.

The Tame are one of the most boring teams in the NHL to watch.

GO NORTH STARS!!!!!!

I say 6.5 is a fair price. Even though his skills are second to none he has yet to stay healthy and play superbly throughout the whole campaign.

June 13, 2008  07:59 AM ET

10.8 for this guy is a JOKE. Obviously no one else is stupid enough to give him that kind of money.

June 13, 2008  07:59 AM ET

Your right that he never stays healthy. But then again, his name is Marion.

June 13, 2008  08:40 AM ET

he can't stay healthy and he's going to demand that much???? Wild are fools if they pay that amount 7 mil tops for him, with an incentive on games played

June 13, 2008  09:01 AM ET

Minnestota, just go ice fishing instead. Your team is irrelevent.

June 13, 2008  10:47 AM ET

The Minnesota Wild want to sign him. Does he?

He might want to sniff around places like .... Ottawa, for instance. The Rangers have a big piggy bank and, there's always the Pens, always willing to buy more talent!

June 13, 2008  10:51 AM ET

There is no way he is worth 10 million/season. I would work up a sign and trade deal with a big spending team like Philly or the Rangers, for two or three top prospects. I just don't see the logic in paying anyone (outside of Crosby or Malkin and very few others, maybe Brodeur) that kind of cheese. Hockey is the ultimate team game, unlike the NBA where individuals can carry a team. Having one guy = 20% of the payroll is insane, somewhere the depth has be be damaged significantly, and does that make you a better team?

June 13, 2008  11:06 AM ET

10.8 million a year? I believe this guy is wrong but if he isn't, have it it, Minnesota. LOL

All teams have the same piggy bank. It's how you spend it that counts. See: salary cap.

June 13, 2008  11:35 AM ET

True, OtherOne81. But some teams have the ability to use it more wisely than others. See: Red Wings.

June 13, 2008  11:48 AM ET

Exactly. And man did they use it well! Players had to be taking paycuts.

June 13, 2008  12:01 PM ET

i'd like to see him play on a more offensive minded team.i think he would like to aswell.the wild will prob pay him more than he's worth because if he goes it would be bad p.r. for them.still as ted di'biase used to say "everyman has their price!"and he'l stay i think.

June 13, 2008  12:02 PM ET

All piggy banks are in fact equal.

He does have a tendency to get hurt a bit. I think he should try playing a whole season, maybe have an Ovechkin year before he starts asking for $10 million

June 13, 2008  12:03 PM ET

I don't get why everyone is hating on Minnesota. I'm not from Minnesota, but isn't it the biggest state for hockey? anyway, Gaborik is one of their best players....that's why they should resign him

June 13, 2008  12:05 PM ET

No hating...the season's over....

I forgot my closer, sorry

He will never have an Ovechkin year in Minny. It's an impossibility.

But his fragility is an issue to me.

I like the Wild though. Any team with a guy like Boogard has to have a place in my heart.
