Cubs interested in Podsednik

With Ryan Spilborghs set to receive a string of at-bats in center field, that has created uncertainty regarding the future of Rockies backups Willy Taveras and Scott Podsednik. The Cubs have created a working list of potential available left-handed bats, with Podsednik among several names being explored. Their interest will hinge largely on current center fielder Jim Edmonds' performance. Podsednik was a catalyst on the White Sox team that won the 2005 World Series. The Cubs inquired about Podsednik as a free agent last winter.

Huge power threat... Do it!

There is a reason that he no longer plays for the white sox, leave him in Colorado with the rest of their sucky players!

Reed Johnson and Edmonds are doing just fine thank you. The dude had one amazing year with the Sox, but he's gone back to being a below average player since then. no thanks.

If he were playing well in colorado he wouldn't be losing at bats to spilborghs. Leave him in Colorado and focus on getting better pitching with our prospects.

I'm curious to know, MarqND, which players on the Rockies roster are sucky? Are you forgetting that this is largely the same team which took them to the World Series last year? That was a pretty stupid comment. However, lets make a real deal. Willy Taveras and Yorvit Torrealba for a decent pitcher. Podsednik is pretty valuable to the club. Spilborghs is better than Taveras, Iannetta is better than Torrealba, but they're both pretty good players.

yeah, i'll pass. thanks, though.

June 13, 2008  11:13 AM ET

first Edmonds, now Podsednik? maybe Marty Brenneman can do a few games of play-by-play?

June 13, 2008  11:17 AM ET

the cubs do kind of need a lead off hit other then theriot. but podsednik is a strecth why not go after taveras he is a little better

June 13, 2008  11:31 AM ET

wtnelson, if you think the Cubs are dealing any pitching...especially for a mediocre lead-off man like Pods...you're out of your mind. Edmonds and Johnson are just fine in center, at least as good as Pods, and the Cubs are saving a package of prospects for Sabathia at the trade deadline.

June 13, 2008  11:37 AM ET

It would be a good pickup.

June 13, 2008  11:37 AM ET

Oh, and another thing, wtnelson, why in the world would the Cubs trade for a catcher? Soto's been unbelievable. So, keep Taveras and Torrealba. Things are going pretty good on the north side just as they are.

June 13, 2008  11:42 AM ET

i don't get it

June 13, 2008  12:03 PM ET

Limited market for him; the name's too damn hard to spell.

June 13, 2008  12:07 PM ET

Terrible idea, the Cubs could get the same production out of Felix Pie. This trade only makes sense if they are trying to bolster their AAA roster.

June 13, 2008  01:33 PM ET

First off, Ringo Bingo, I said trade Taveras, not Pods. Second, I didn't state it clearly enough. Trade Taveras and Torrealba to ANYBODY for a decent pitcher. Maybe trade Hawpe and Torrealba for a decent pitcher and let Spilly play right field. That may be more marketable. Torrealba is a helluva defensive catcher, and he would do well on a team with a few good, young pitchers.

Got it, wtnelson. But that leaves the question of why you think anyone in this discussion -- the subject of which is whether the Cubs may go get Pods -- is interested in discussing a bunch of other hypothetical trades involving the Rockies. I know they're bad this year, but aren't there any Rockies-related discussions going on?
