Toronto coach still miffed
Toronto FC coach John Carver still is hot under the collar about losing key players to international competition. But the good news is, he no longer wants to ring his backup goalkeeper's neck. The first year Toronto FC coach has no problems with players leaving for important international assignments, such as World Cup qualifying games or the Olympics. But he believes it's unfair to lose top performers, such as Canadians Greg Sutton and Jim Brennan, for games that don't mean a lot. Carver's starting lineup isn't itched in stone, but Sutton's departure means another start for backup goalkeeper Brian Edwards, who last week felt the stinging wrath of his coach.

It's not a Canadian thing, Evertonius. It's a Toronto Sun thing! They pride themselves in being "equal opportunity employers." That's why they hire all the illiterates they can find!

I'm confused by the lead in this Sun blurb. The matches in question are not friendlies; they are the 2nd round of CONCACAF WC qualifiers for 2010. 24 home-and-home series yield twelve teams for semi-final group play this fall. Since Canada didn't get out of the qualifying semi-finals for '06, you would think bringing up the old complaint about losing his Honduran to a friendly would be irrelevant. But TFC's just devastated tomorrow; they're losing Sutton, Brennan, Edu, Marshall and Guevara to four different national teams. Couldn't MLS have come up with a mid-week schedule for this weekend or next? It would only be necessary at this early stage, with 24 nations left competing.

Unimportant matches are a natural part of life. Rejoice for those around you. Mourn them do not. Miss them do not. Attachment leads to jealously. The shadow of greed, that is.

The problem lies with MLS. Most leagues observe FIFA's international calender and don't schedule games during this time. MLS does. Its frustrating as a fan knowing that the star players on your team are going to miss games for international commitments potentially costing your team points in the standings.

Carver sure seems to complain a lot. C'mon, LA will miss Donovan for about a month once the second leg against Barbados is said and done and more than that if he choses to play in the Olympics. I'm no LA fan but he is a much bigger piece than anything TFC is losing.
I do share Guga's frustration at times but until the overwhelming majority of teams are in buildings they own and operate their hands are tied.
