How Harrison helped Tyree

David Tyree has penned a book titled "More Than Just a Catch," due out in September, and it includes an introduction by Harrison. Harrison explained why he was willing to contribute to such a painful memory for New England fans. Part of it had to do with Tyree's spiritual journey. Tyree, a special teams standout, took leave from the Giants for a mid-December game when his mother died of a heart attack at age 59. In 2004, Tyree had been arrested for possession of marijuana, and he also had struggles with alcohol before turning his life around and becoming a born-again Christian. "A lot of people have been asking me questions, am I mad or upset at the catch," said Harrison. "Obviously you want to make the ball come out, but at the same time when you give everything to something, you don't have any regrets. With that, I can say, 'I felt like it was a lucky catch.' He was a guy that we didn't even prepare for and he came in and caught a touchdown and had a big catch. Sometimes you're a hero every once in a while in your life. But more so than that, just from a spiritual standpoint, I heard what he went through with his mom, her passing, and everything he kind of endured this season. You can see why he was blessed at that particular time. God has a way of showing different things through different people, and I'm not a hater. You beat us, so I congratulate you and we move on."

Come on dude, find a more appropriate time to hurl insults. Nothing negative about this story...except your response to it.

June 13, 2008  07:36 AM ET

Yes really.

It's nice that he feels that way. It was a lucky catch.

Exactly my sentiment and

He sure does Rodney.. wonder what He is trying to show us with that post thats 3rd from the top?

June 13, 2008  08:25 AM ET

Yep, I looked it up. Last year the Patriots were 18-1 and the 1 loss was the Super Bowl. Not insulting anyone, just stating facts.

June 13, 2008  08:35 AM ET

I always found it hard to like Harrison, but that was a very class act thing to do and say. Jeesh, I may have to consider a new opinion about the guy..

I'm not going to throw out insults, but how does this statement make Harrison "great?" Maybe, if he were a God-fearing man, he'd have one of those hero type moments. But thats a whole different story and that is up to him to make that choice.

That catch was the difference between 19-0 and 18 and Ohh Noo! That was easily the most memorable play of last season.

June 13, 2008  08:54 AM ET

Thank you Rodney for bringing a little bit of class to the Pats after that season I want to forget.

most memorable for me, that will be burned into my mind forever was Eli breaking that monstrous tackle to throw the ball in the first place. I will never forget him getting away from 6 defenders.

"Obviously you want to make the ball come out, but at the same time when you give everything to something, you don't have any regrets. With that, I can say, 'I felt like it was a lucky catch.' - Harrison

Harrison is basically saying here that he gave his all on that play and it still wasn't good enough; therefore, he feels it was a lucky catch. So then, what do you call it when Tyree says I gave that play my all and came down with the catch? Is it still called lucky? I was beginning to type something explaining why luck might be a part of it, but then I kept countering myself. Tyree did all the right things as a WR... catch the ball at the highest point, position yourself between the ball and the defender, use two hands to catch the ball and bring it into your body, etc. He did all those things, but when Harrison tried to break it out of his hands, Tyree was able to pin the ball against his helmet and use his strength to hold on. I don't see that as luck, but as an amazing effort. Just b/c you didn't prepare for him in practice, doesn't mean he can make plays only through luck.

Did you hear what his offensive line is saying about that play? They told Eli that if they hadn't missed their blocking assignments, he would've never made that play. They're taking credit for it now.

June 13, 2008  09:36 AM ET

From hearing that statement from Rodney Harrison, Gotta respect him.

Not a bad loser, but he is a very very bad winner.

June 13, 2008  10:37 AM ET

I'm with Peter King on the play, even though I don't think the coffee nerd is anything special he called this one right.

Assante Samuel was standing around doing nothing and could have easily assisted Harrison and all this would be moot.

If "if's and ands were pots and pans" this might mean something I realize but Samuel was doing a photo op instead of playing football.

I don't think a god had anything to do with it.

June 13, 2008  10:40 AM ET

Peter King is exactly right, Harrison is not as much to blame for this as Asante. Still that being said I am starting to warm up to Harrison. No longer do I detest him like I used to. He really did do a good thing here.

June 13, 2008  10:48 AM ET

Harrison is smart. He will get a piece of the action, regarding the sales from the book. Ultimately, I think his intentions were good. However, he knows it is better to be a part of what will be the greatest catch in Superbowl history (although on the wrong end) and make some cash.

He will get nothing from the book. All it does is show us a different light to a player who has been labeled a cheater (for the banned substance incident) and a dirty player. This helps show him in a different light which is a good thing. Plus he could be going this just because it is the right thing to do.
