According to several league sources, Danilo Gallinari is putting out word that he would like to be drafted by a franchise in the greater New York area, among a few other preferred teams. It was explained to me this way: If he isn't a top five pick and he winds up being drafted by, say, the Charlotte Bobcats, he may decide to remain the next year or two in Italy with his current club, Armani Jeans Milan. Mr. Giorgio Armani himself is prepared to make Gallinari feel very wanted with salary and other commercial opportunities, not to mention a club that hopes to move up in the Euroleague next year. "I heard Monday that he wants to go to New York or New Jersey," an NBA team president said. "He's too good to pull out of the draft, but he might stay over there [in Europe] for a while if he doesn't like the team that drafts him."

Who was the last cat coming from Europe besides Mano that was a quick transition and instant impact? Maybe he knows something that can't be seen from the European trend

i think that these uero players entering the draft should have to play for the team that drafts them unless the team that drafts them allows them to stay at home and play for a few years. and if they dont like those conditions dont enter the draft.

i also want to play for the knicks

June 13, 2008  08:02 AM ET

come to miami we also have italians in our city

June 13, 2008  08:11 AM ET

F that. This guy better be incredible if he's going to play this game. This sends a bad message to NBA teams; he isn't helping the cause of other european players.

June 13, 2008  08:14 AM ET

the knicks should draft niko bellic. he would give major defensive presence off of the boards and the boats, unlike most euros.

Remember how this worked out for Yi Jianlian?

June 13, 2008  08:49 AM ET

As far as I'm concerned, he just sealed his fate. What gives him the right to try to hold someones feet to the fire? If he wants to play in Italy, Ciao Bella! He;s done nothing yet to warrant a top 5 pick.

I like it, this kid wants the New York pressure. He's much better than that crap Toronto drafted a few years ago.

June 13, 2008  09:52 AM ET

Does this guy have one highlight to be seen? He may as well be a high school to NBA type candidate. They play a finesse game

June 13, 2008  09:56 AM ET

finally, someone wants to go to Jersey...how refreshing.

Who is Mano? Do you mean Manu? If so, he is from South America, not Europe.

After last nights Lakers disater (I am a fan), can we stop hyping these horrible Eurtrash players...I would rather have a HS jv guy on my team than one of these clowns

June 13, 2008  11:54 AM ET

Then again, a has been gutless Eurotrash wanna be NBA guy would be perfect for the Knicks

June 13, 2008  12:10 PM ET

Who was the last Euro that came in and made an impact? How about Tony Parker?

June 13, 2008  12:47 PM ET

There has never been a FRONT COURT euro player (or Asian or SA)
that has been the STAR of a chanpionship team

- Maybe Toni Kukoc,.....but he was the 3rd option on the Bulls -

- totally different game as a guard-

June 13, 2008  01:19 PM ET

Let this jerk stay in Italy! If you're gonna waste money on an arrogant future bust, why not make it an American arrogant future bust?

June 13, 2008  01:32 PM ET

I read those comments and I just can't believe how some of you are ignorant! As for yesterdays Celtics win (I'm a fan), the European players didn't mess that up, it was Kobe Bryant who failed to do anything. As for Gallinari, he is one of the biggest talents that Europe has produced in about the last ten year. As a journalist, I followed his progress over the years, and what he would bring is great shooting, rebounding, defense, and above all that, he is a team player. Important thing about Gallinari is that he is not and up and coming player for whom the team that drafts him would have to wait for in terms of producing for the team, he is already an established player with many great qualities. He should be a top 5 pick, but after that Bargnani fiasco, the teams are afraid to draft European players that high. I follow closely all the draft discussions, and I can honestly say that he is by far the better player that O.J. Mayo, or Jayrred Bayless, or even Michael Beasley. He is a true sleeper in this draft and he will be a force to be reckon with inside the NBA.

The same rhetoric was said about Frederic Weis, Darko Milicic and Nikoloz Tskitishvili. History speaks for itself. Nowitzki and the late Petrovic are arguably the only two European-bred players to have immediate impact.
