Manchester United chasing U.S. teen

Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson is chasing big Brek Shea. The 6-foot-3 Shea, who plays for FC Dallas in MLS, caught United's eye at last month's Toulon tournament in France, where he stood out despite being years younger than most in the under-23 category. The powerful Shea, whose family is of Norwegian stock, can play at center half or in midfield and has been outstanding in his first season as a professional in America.

Outstanding?
He's got a good left foot but where does 'outstanding' come from.

June 13, 2008  11:24 AM ET

"The People" said it, so it must be true (wt f?)

June 13, 2008  11:32 AM ET

Well, he'll be coming after me next year...

its really good the MLS has young stars that attract interest like this, MLS can develop them more and give them some homeland star power, and then make millions of them like they did with Altidore

What you gots a problem with the kid being considered "outstanding" , son!
He is outstanding despite his age, and lack of experience

Definition; Outstanding: clearly of very high quality or clearly superior or better (than) to others in the same group or category.

This ji gga is nuts you gotz a problem son!

It's good that Sir Alex can ID a player but hopefully if this kid goes over to United he gets a chance. Too often young guys like him get buried and don't get the chance to develop.

Maybe he's better off in MLS for a couple more years.

How has he been outstanding in his first season as a professional? If I recall correctly (and I'm too lazy to go to the stats), he has appeared in one match for FCD. That's not to say he doesn't have great potential.

June 13, 2008  12:05 PM ET

British use the word "outstanding" which is the proper way of speaking in reference/regards to someone being good. So stop being midless tadpods and get with the program.
You bloody racoons!

June 13, 2008  12:16 PM ET

I heard right in Altidore going to Villareal right?

June 13, 2008  01:10 PM ET

Everyone ready for a repeat of the Freddy Adu let down ? Sir Alex gave Adu a two week trial and said no thanks, lets hope for the boys sake that this doesn't turn out the same.

June 13, 2008  02:07 PM ET

Well, he played club for the best boy's club in the country, the Dallas Texans. I just hope he doesn't turn out to be another kenny cooper...good to see an american(sort of) make some waves with a big club like us. He stood out in the u-23s with him only being 17 or 18.

June 13, 2008  03:03 PM ET

Adu- from Ghana
Altidore- Haitian descent
Brek Shea- Norwegian stock?

When is there going to be a full American from American descent that will be any good as the previous mentioned?
Sooner or later, Im sure there will be one.

June 13, 2008  03:25 PM ET

Donovan, his parents are Canadians. who cares though

June 13, 2008  03:32 PM ET

MH7King...I didn't know there was such a thing as a "full American from American descent." What does an full American look like, exactly??? I'm pretty sure your ancestors came on a boat of some sort to this country...unless you live on a reservation.

June 13, 2008  03:59 PM ET

If this does happen I hope he can pull a Jonathan Spector. Go to Man U, train with them for a couple of years, and then get traded to another EPL side that will hopefully not be relegated. I don't expect him to be a starter or get first team minutes with one of the best teams in the world but it is a good oppurtunity for a young player to develop with a lot of potential.

Do I need to send a list of Americans that Man Utd brought into their system that never amounted to much or at least not as much as we thought? Hate to be cynical, but I'll "wait and see" what this amounts to.

PS even if you ccome from a reservation your people crossed the land bridge from Asia to North America 40,000 years ago. Well, that's all technicality stuff. Regardless, I'll take a 1/4 American, 1/2 West Indian, and 1/4 Mongolian if he is a world class player and decides to play fot the USMNT. Being 1/2 German, 1/2 American, I guess I'm just not very picky. I hear Heath Pearce if 1/2 Easter-Islander on his father's mailman's side.

June 13, 2008  04:20 PM ET

Full American? I'm first generation American of Trinidadian parents. I will gladly take someone who either became a naturalized citizen, or like myself has parents from another country if they are good enough to play on the USMNT.

June 13, 2008  05:01 PM ET

I hope they cap this kid soon he has had a good season, but we need some consitancecy

June 13, 2008  06:11 PM ET

Yea usa have a couple of descent soccer players who are in europe.
Jozy Altidore-Haitian
Freddy Adu-Ghanan
Dominic Cervi-itlian
Ouchi Onyewu-Nigerian
Lee Nguyen-Vietnames
Sal Zizzo-Italian
Quentin Westberg-French (U-23)

Ok people lets not get too deep on the subject of full American. By full American, I meant having two parents 4 grandparents that were born in America.
