Referee: Donaghy full of it

One NBA referee says Tim Donaghy is full of it with his recent court-filed allegations that league officials affected the outcomes of two playoff series for the sake of boosting revenue and TV ratings. Donaghy awaits July 14 sentencing after pleading guilty to federal crimes of assisting gamblers and betting on NBA games. Donaghy charged that fellow refs manipulated the outcomes of games in the 2002 Western Conference finals (the L.A. Lakers-Sacramento) and in Dallas' 2005 playoff series win over Houston. "It's the same stuff he said a year ago when he was being investigated," says the NBA referee, who asks for anonymity. "The NBA predicted a couple of months ago that, during the finals, his attorneys would come up with something like this."

Donaghy says what every knowledgeable basketball fans who watch the game 6 of the western finals in 2002 know: the officiating was so bad and insulting, it's hard not to think the game was not fixed. There were so many phantom calls against the Kings in the fourth quarter, it was so embarassing to watch the game. The Kings were simply demoralized after the game, game 7 was a foregone conclusion.

It's time for NBA to let an independent investigator opens a full investigation for 2002 and 2005 finals. Otherwise, the league's reputation will be tainted forever.

I wonder if this anonymous ref is one of the ones who Donaghey is saying manipulated the game???

Im pretty sure it already is.. which is a shame... MLB, NFL and now NBA..

June 14, 2008  09:53 AM ET

I believe the NBA is rigged. That's okay though, I'm not from the inner city so I can't relate to it.

Its funny that Bavetta's name came up. I think it was a Boston-Cleveland game, one ref made a call and Bevetta came running in to overrule the call made.

And it was one of those calls that even the announcers said "What?". It took them about 3 minutes of air time to figure out what had happened.

Just look at a game today then one on tape from the 80's where the Pistons, Lakers and Celtics ruled.

Show me players from the 80's tapes (even the superstars) complaining about fouls after every single shot. These days games are dictated by the calls and trips to the free throw line. It was a different game back then. A better game.

Now superstars are just whiny no matter if the shot goes in or not, they think they got fouled. Never mind that they get to take an extra step or two or just flat out carry the ball.

Dude why don't you take your daily dose of disgusting rhetoric somewhere where other hate-mongers can appreciate it. You obviously have no sports knowledge or anything germane to the topic. Why not try www.stupidredneck.com

What is the Ref supposed to say? "I admit it illegal refereeing was going on in the NBA. I want to go to prison." This is probably a ref who either wasn't in the know (probably the lead refs were given instructions from Stern and he just told the refs on his team that night to call things tight on certain players because they are known for doing this or that) or he knows he's close to being implicated also.

Hllywd,

I'm just saying that I don't have several children spread out accross the country, I'm not covered in tattoos, I don't smoke reefer, I don't listen to rap crap music about killing cops and beating women, and I don't have nightclub shootouts at 3 am.

Having said that, how can anyone expect me to relate to the NBA?

How come you rarely hear of players in the NHL having these problems?

The thread made no mention of any of the things in which you speak. It was an NBA thread about the referees. You're here everyday with the same hate-filled message. If you can't relate to the NBA, what are you here for? Your sole purpose on FanNation is to create confusion. Have you noticed that noone other than me has even responded to you? You know why? Because everyone except you is here to discuss SPORTS. If you aren't into basketball we understand. Just take your racist rant to CNN please.

With a low life like Donaghy his comments have as much meaning as Roger Clemens' words !!!

June 14, 2008  11:22 AM ET

Instead of just saying that he is "full of it", why won't the NBA counter with some evidence showing that the calls in that 2002 game were justifiable or at least plausible mistakes from the vantage point of the refs. If this is going to be the NBA's only defense to this, then they couldn't sound more guilty even if they tried.

June 14, 2008  11:38 AM ET

Just remember noone gave a second thought to Jose Canseco...until they looked into it. Anytime there is this amount of money being generated, there is room for improprieties. I do not believe the league as a whole is fixed, and certainly Donahy has every reason to put the blame on other people as well, but he isn't the only one. I just don't think that some of the "phantom fouls" are an accident. All they have to do is blow 2 or 3 critical calls, and the rest of the game can be called straight. If the game is a blowout, he may not be able to intervene, but in a game where a turnover one way or the other makes a difference in the outcome of the game, this guy is huge. And I guarantee Donahy isn't by himself. I still want to know why Joey Crawford is still working critical Spurs games.

Oh good "patriotscheated," I'll assume that you're a football fan based on your name. Because you know, NFL players are a far more savory bunch than Basketball players. What with all the HGH, gun charges, positive drug tests, bar fights, woman punching, and shootings.

Give it a rest. The NBA fan base keeping the sport alive is rich white men with corporate connections.

June 14, 2008  02:09 PM ET

must some **** wit always play the race card??? How infantile...

June 14, 2008  02:13 PM ET

Nice headline, Donaghy full of it. With 90 percent of prison populations living, breathing basketball, and sports, I would not want to be in his shoes if he winds up in the joint. He'll be full of it. Dead man walking...

why are you all answering thepatriotscheated. I don't even think he's a racists. just someone who's trying to get some attention and irritate a few people. probably a classic boring and uninteresting person who's stories are so rhetorical and bland that when he first made his first comment about the nba and not living in the inner city on some other post/thread or maybe just made a statement that was taken the wrong way, he noticed all the attention he got and that people were finally interested in something he said, he became addicted to it and keeps doing it. I guess for him, negative attention is better than no attention at all. Just ignore his cry and he'll find other ways like maybe developing a personality.

June 14, 2008  03:27 PM ET

I love how a referee comes out and says that Donaghy is full of it but that official won't even release his name. His desire to remain anonymous says enough. If you did nothing wrong and have nothing to hide, then why are you concerned about your anonymity?

AND SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHEN THE NBA PREDICTED THAT DONAGHY WOULD DO THIS DURING THE FINALS? THERE HAS BEEN NO MENTION OF SUCH A THING UNTIL NOW. DAVID STERN, THE REFEREES, AND THE NBA IN IT'S ENTIRETY IS NOW BECOMING LESS CREDIBLE BY THE DAY.

June 14, 2008  03:49 PM ET

game 4, thank goodness, had no referee issues imo. that is how games should be played.
