Illini RB Mendenhall transferring

Running back Walter Mendenhall has made his plans to transfer from Illinois final, enrolling at Illinois State as a grad student and joining the football team. Redbirds coach Denver Johnson says Mendenhall has started working out with the team. His brother, Rashard Mendenhall, led the Illini and the Big Ten in rushing. The Steelers drafted him in the first round of this year's NFL draft. Walter Mendenhall left Illinois after getting only limited playing time. He carried the ball four times for 57 yards last season.

Let me get this straight. He quits because his brother got to carry the bulk of the load last year? What about this year? He must not be that good or he would have risen on the depth chart!

Illinois = One year wonders

I thought Rashard said that one of the good things about him leaving is that it will give his bro more playing time. Doesn't look like that part worked out too well.

Overall, i don't know how good he is.
I do know he wasn't going to be the starter.
If he isn't going to get the start at illinois, why not transfer to where he can get some playing time?

At least he's getting a higher education through grad school.

Walter Mendenhall was never going to start at Illinois. he has played fullback and linebacker over the past few years. the upcoming season will feature 2-3 freshman running backs who all were going to play in front of mendenhall.

hey may not have been a starter but god damn not everyone can be a star

Four times for 57 yards?

June 15, 2008  07:43 AM ET

I have it on good authority that the Rashard committed to IL with the expectation that his brother would also be offered a scholarship. Walter is not Big Ten Division I talent and has been riding his brothers coattails. He has zero chance of playing in the NFL. At least he received a degree from a good school and is going to graduate school, all for free mind you, so he should quit his *itching and be thankful for what he got.

Illinois State: chance to be big fish in small pond anyways. I think Ohio should get used to losing to Illinois, by they way. Zook is putting together a program and Michigan and Ohio have had it too easy too long.

I heard that one of the assistant coaches was harassing him about eye color. He also mentioned that he had a certain smell. He had made a case for a starting spot this year until he had to leave a practice early last month with the stomach flu. They were unsympathetic after an on the field tackle resulted in Mendenhall accidentally defecating on the field. Teammate Nardell Young is concerned for Mendenhall " I love my teammate and brother with all my heart, but hell, it totally affected my brother" He is still embarrassed and emotionally he says. "It was a misdirection play and when I cut left two guys hit at the same time and with so much impact that I pooped. I broke the tackle and stayed on my feet. I could feel it bouncing in my pants around the 40 yard line. You can't help but think about poop in your pants so I slowed down. I got to the 36 before I was tackled. They had to bring out a blanket to cover me and carry me off. It looked like A career ending injury, but it was just too devastating and messy. I'm always afraid of messing myself when I get hit.

Walter simply isn't the caliber of his brother, plain and simple.

Oh, and if you think Illinois is a one-year wonder, pwronk01, you must not be paying attention to Zook's recruiting.....

Good luck to him.
