Malkin on thin ice in Pittsburgh?

A month ago, Evgeni Malkin was the toast of the town. Now, you wonder if he's just plain toast. Should star winger Marian Hossa accept the long-term, lucrative contract offer the Penguins have put before him, Malkin's days in Pittsburgh could be numbered. That doesn't necessarily mean Malkin would be traded next week or even next year. He might even sign a new contract this summer. But it's hard to believe the Penguins could keep three premium young centers - Sidney Crosby, Malkin and Jordan Staal - plus Hossa, goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, defenseman Ryan Whitney, etc., together for the long haul.

The Penguins will not become a dynasty.

Who else is as young, as talented, or set for the long haul? You have no real team patscheated you are just a malcontent that likes to badmouth the Pens and seem to really really like Sidney Crosby

June 15, 2008  10:05 AM ET

This is what I said all along. They don't have enough to sign all these guys. If Crosby has any say, and I'm sure he does, they're going to sign Hossa. Once that happens you're not going to be able to hang on to some of your UFA's. Free up the room, trade Malkin, and sign Malone, Staal, and Hall. See if you can keep Talbot and Eaton. If Eaton can stay healthy that is. No matter what he says about staying Orpik is gonna move. Dump Roberts and Gill. Keep Laraque for keeping other teams from running your talent. Look to fill Orpik's spot with a Malkin trade and get some other up and coming talent to boot. This is a no brainer TRADE HIM NOW.

(patiently wating for bostongm to rebutt) I know we respectfully disagree on this

the problem with trading malkin now is what do you get for him -- if it's draft picks that doesn't help you now and if it's players then you still have the problem of signing them. some version of the moves you describe is going to happen, though, i agree. the pens may have to take their lumps with all the free agents and that's too bad but they are pretty well set up. they'll come out of this with an absolutely world-class top line, some good defensemen, and an up and coming young goalie.

I've said that they should trade him all along. Preferably to someone you think will end up with a lottery pick next year. Trade him for a d & a forward & a 1st pick. Hopefully they end up with a good pick that they'll only have to pay a rookie contract for. Staal and the collective group they can keep instead of signing him is a better long term option. I actually like Malkin, but it would be a good move for the team.

This is crazy. Malkin is among the top 5 offensive players in the game. You do everything in your power to sign him for the long term to team with Crosby for years. Hossa had a good playoff. So what? This guy is 29 (if my memory serves me) and he will be looking for Crosby-like dollars. Let Hossa go, accept it for the deal you made, which was a playoff rental. Three players making 6 million plus (Crosby, Malkin and Hossa) cripples your cap flexibility. Two not so much. Let Hossa fly and resign Malone and Orpik for sure. Staal is going to be a very good two-way pivot. However, offering him any more than 3.5 /season is crazy, based on his numbers thus far. If he tries to strong-arm the Pens into more money, send him packing for some really good young talent coming back.

June 15, 2008  10:55 AM ET

I don't see Staal strong arming anyone other than those that go into the corners with him.

June 15, 2008  11:33 AM ET

I've been saying this for a while. People keep talking about the Pens winning the Cup next year or in two years, but I don't see them doing it. They will lose too much, which is why the salary cap was brougt in and I like the cap.

I think I'm going to file a law suit against this writer for plagiarism. He clearly has been scanning my comments on this issue for a number of weeks.

MHWings> Do not concern yourself with BGM's rebuttals. Economics are clearly not his strong suit. Besides, imagine how tickled he will be salivating over the possibility of getting Malkin in a Bruins sweater...

Malkin will be in Pittsburgh for at least six to seven more years...Malone and Orpik are as good as gone if Hossa resigns with the Pens. Malone is going to have a big pay day probably by Columbus. Although I am a Malone fan since he is from Pittsburgh, I believe whoever signs him will be disappointed. I believe Malone had a career year that will never be matched again in his career. Malone's numbers were a product of playing with Malkin and Sykora and on the first power play with Crosby, Malkin, Sykora, Whitney, and Gonchar at various points of the season. Having said that Malone is very talented and toughness/leadership is a given to whoever signs him. On the other hand, the Pens have many options on defense which makes Orpik expendable. Eaton may resign with the Pens, but I'm not sure he can ever stay healthy for a full season. I honestly believe the defense for the Pens will look like this next year. Scuderi and Gonchar...Letang and Gill...Whitney and Sydor/Goligoski. I'm really interested if the Pens deal Sydor because Alex Goligoski is going to be a stud in the NHL and he is really close to being ready much like Letang was last season. On a different note, I believe the Pens will resign Ruutu and possibly Hall while letting all the other lower line players walk such as Laraque. The Pens have plenty of players in their system that can play on the checking lines. This was proven by all of the injuries the Pens had during the season. Roberts is the biggest question mark on the checking lines. Will he retire or come back and if he comes back will he play for cheaper than he did this year which the Pens will probably need him to do. Finally, I believe Ty Conklin will be gone and Sabu with be Fluery's backup next year. Hopefully, the Pens can sign Fluery to a long-term contract this summer or during the season.

June 15, 2008  01:14 PM ET

The Pens need to get a couple of good defensemen for Malkin. He has good value now.
Their priority should be to sign Hossa. He was their most dangerous player in the finals.
They also need a better coach. Larry Murphy, who has never coached, would be a great fit for their team. He's the type of guy who could teach the youngsters about the transition game, two-way play, etc....

June 15, 2008  02:20 PM ET

dane = dmitch

June 15, 2008  02:29 PM ET

They just need to keep him for one more year to get a Cup.

June 15, 2008  02:58 PM ET

dmitch- totally agree- best post today.
they will find a way to keep Hossa and Malkin keeping the big 3 for the next 6 years and 2 stanley cups with it. Shero is the Pats answer to a GM without the BS cheating.

GO PENS. GO STEELERS!
