09:48 AM ET 06.15 | Despite the pleas of Kentucky Speedway's prospective new owner, a NASCAR official says there will be no Sprint Cup race at the track next year. NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said Saturday that the 2009 Sprint Cup series schedule won't include a stop at the 1.5-mile tri-oval located about halfway between Louisville and Cincinnati. Speedway Motorsports Inc. is in the process of purchasing the northern Kentucky track from the current ownership group led by businessman Jerry Carrol. SMI chairman Bruton Smith toured the track with Carrol on Saturday and told reporters he remained optimistic about landing a coveted Cup date next year if the current ownership group drops an antitrust lawsuit against NASCAR and International Speedway. The speedway filed the lawsuit in 2005, alleging they worked together to create an unfair monopoly and prevent Kentucky from securing a Cup race. The lawsuit was dismissed in January, but the speedway has appealed.

A few plain manila envelopes will change hands with a bit of cash in them and Viola, we got racing at Kentucky. I am getting tired of seeing this picture week after week. They must have a differant picture of this Don Rickles look a like somewhere in the files.

I was on Kentucky Speedway last July in a 64 Nova when we attended the Nat'l Nova Convention nearby....It seems to be a very nice track and they deserve a Sprint race there.. There was 73,000 there for the Nationwide race, these fans would pack the place!!!!!

JKINDLERAY is 100% right on this one, but it's the intricacies that fascinate me.
Somebody will be fooled.
Somebody will be threatened
Somebody will eventually be paid off,
And if they don't play ball, somebody might have an "accident"
But some track will lose a race and Kentucky will get it.

I have to agree. If you can put 73,000 people in the seats for a stand alone Nationwide event, you need to look really hard about putting a Cup race there with either the trucks or Nationwide Series as well on the same weekend. I heard a report on the radio this week that said it wouldn't be that hard to build another 20,000 seats there. It could be done in a short period of time.

And then I could go to a race that is close to me!!! Kentucky!!!

I don't know much about this track, but very interesting comments made. I am also getting sick of seeing Bruton's face every few days. He looks like an angry little mouse.haha

Anything under 1.3 miles should be dropped, as well as the road courses...YUCK!

June 15, 2008  09:27 PM ET

You think Martinsville and Richmond should be dropped?

I would prefer more mile or 3/4 mile tracks on the circuit rather than the "cookie cutters." I guess someone somewhere decided the mile and halfs were the perfect size. Most seats you can see around the whole track and have enough seats to turn a big profit.

SMI chairman Bruton Smith toured the track with Carrol on Saturday and told reporters he remained optimistic about finding his neck in the garage area.

It's win win for everyone. Like Kentucky Speedway, both Trucks & Nationwide sellout their and deserves a Nextel Race. Heck move the Labor day race their, at least it would be a sellout and supported better than it is California. Plus not adding a race, just swapping one and tracks not owned by Smith or ISC wouldn't lose a race.

I'm with Red Zone. The season has more than enough 1.5 mile tracks already. Kentucky deserves a Sprint Cup race, but don't take one away from the quirky, interesting tracks. Strip a date from Atlanta.
