Bruins land commitments
Brendan Lane, a 6-foot-9, 200-pound forward from Rocklin High near Sacramento, said today he has committed to play basketball for UCLA. Lane, who will be a senior in the fall, is the second California high school forward prospect to commit to UCLA for the 2009-2010 season. Reeves Nelson, 6-7 and 215 pounds, of Modesto Christian High, has also committed to UCLA. According to Scout.com, Lane is the second-best power forward prospect in the West and Nelson is ranked fourth. Nationally, several recruiting services list Lane as a top-20 forward prospect. Lane said that earlier this year he had narrowed his college choices to California, Stanford and UCLA and that the coaching changes -- Mike Montgomery replaced the fired Ben Braun at Cal and Johnny Dawkins took over at Stanford when Trent Johnson left for Louisiana State -- made it easier to pick UCLA.

The seat just got a little warmer for Ben Howland. He continues to get top-prospects so a national championship is expected, not just a Final Four berth.

Ben's finally getting the athletes to match the competition we face in the Final Four. He'll get us a championship or five in the coming years.

I bleed blue and gold, both for UCLA and the NAVY but if we don't pick up # 12 soon, this flood of top 3 recruiting classes will dry up. The early departures hurt, look at this year's NBA finals - imagine a more mature Farmar as a Bruin Senior this past season ... or Ariza who I think played one season before going pro. This past season we saw a selfish Affalo jump to the pros because he was afraid of his stats dipping with Love's presence.
Arron Affalo on last year's team equals undefeated season. PERIOD. Instead, we lose a handful and once again miss out on the championship and worse, Affalo goes on to average 3 pts, 1 assist, 1 rebound, etc ...
I don't doubt we have the weapons for a 4th straight Final Four but we need size to get us there or blistering speed.
