Questioning Kobe's leadership

The Lakers may be down to their final game, and so naturally the conversation has swerved back to where it began, to Kobe Bryant . In October, Bryant was a reluctant employee, pining for a trade but making the best of his situation. Then his young teammates blossomed, everyone bonded, and the Lakers were soon on their merry way to the Western Conference title. Now they trail the Boston Celtics in the N.B.A. finals, 3-1, and people are looking for cracks in the Lakers' foundation. Bryant has scowled and chirped frequently at teammates, particularly in the three losses, making him look once more like an impatient superstar. Game 5 is Sunday night at Staples Center.

When you count all of Kobe's basketball accomplishments , Leader will not be included on the list.

June 15, 2008  09:49 AM ET

come 2 miami with Wade!

June 15, 2008  10:11 AM ET

I do not ever remember anyone thinking of him as a leader. Not what he does best. This year is just a case of when it matters most, he has done the least..

June 15, 2008  10:14 AM ET

LF, I don't think that you know to much about sports if you don't think Kobe is a leader. Kobe clearly is the best player on that team and he has to tell/yell/motivate those around him to perform better. Jordan did it, Brady does it, You have to know the players around you. I'm sure Kobe's team knows he's trying to get the most out of them and nothing more.

June 15, 2008  10:19 AM ET

...best player on the lakers? certainly. best player in the nba? probably. a leader? no, and never has been....

June 15, 2008  10:21 AM ET

Ko-Me is the biggest cry-baby of them all... good grief! Does he have what it takes between his ears to know about delayed gratification? Classic hedonistic character. I hope he never figures it out. Keep on chanting and burning incense with Phil, Kobe, One of these days you will grow up....LMAO.

June 15, 2008  10:46 AM ET

First let me say that I'm not a Lakers fan but I have played sports all my life including college ball. There are many different styles of leadership. If you watch the Lakers you will see Kobe playing his heart out while the rest of the team sits back and waits for him to do it all. Kobe leads by example and if the rest of the team is not going to keep up, it is his job to motivate them to step it up.

June 15, 2008  10:54 AM ET

Kobe hasn't changed in 10 years. He spoke volumes about his "leadership," or lack thereof, when he scored 81 points with 2 assists. That means virtually every Laker possession, he had one thing in mind...the ol' give and go...give me the ball and go to hell. Great individual talent--too bad basketball is a team sport. He could be the greatest if the game were 1 on 1. Leadership...in a word , NO.

Great post Keelee !

You hit the nail right on the head, most of these pretenders don't know jack about sports, let alone basketball.

They spend their time parroting crap they picked up on bathroom walls, and
generally hating a brilliant player because either he's torched their team, or for some off court personal mistakes he's made.

Any true sports fan could not disrespect the Lakers, who are the 2nd more accomplished team and most famous team in NBA history, or the best player on the planet, if they had any basketball intelligence, or knew anything about
the history of the game.

You don't have to like them, but they have earned respect.

Would you say the same thing about Chamberlain ?

Kobe had a team of brick layers during that time period.

With all the talent of which you speak, there should come a certain amount of responsibility. Name 1 player whose statistics have improved because of Kobe. There is no reason Gasol's stats remain virtually the same as they were in Memphis. Fisher? Odom? We're talking LEADERSHIP. You obviously mistook that to mean showmanship. Noone questions his individual abilities.

June 15, 2008  11:15 AM ET

Give me a break. The media is some damn fickle when it comes to Kobe Bryant. One minute they are praising him for finally embracing the leadership role with the younger guys on the team. The next minute they are "questioning" his leadership and saying he is too harsh to his teammates. Make up your mind.

The selection committee for the MVP is comprised of sportwriters and broadcasters. People like you, that are impressed and influenced by an assortment of slam dunks. The LA media machine lobbyed for Kobe to receive a lifetime acheivement award. I know from your comments that you have some knowledge of basketball, so I'm going to assume that you know he had about as much business winning an MVP award as you did.

is it over for the Oompaa Loompaas, will the little Leprechauns take over and shut down Lakerland.

could this be the last time we hear the battle cry "IT'S STILL LOVELY IN OOMPAA LOOMPAA LAND"

All these questions and more will be answered in GAME 5, Judgment Day WIN OR STAY HOME

I just did. Ignoring the facts won't change the facts. There is a good reason why in the time after Shaq and before Gasol, the team never improved.

June 15, 2008  11:45 AM ET

There's an abundance of negative energy in America. WE can find faults in every superstar, if WE look hard enough. KOBE is evolving. He still has character flaws, has yet to fully mature and hasn't become the quintessental "leader" of his team. However, rather than hating on this young man, WE should all hope that he becomes the man WE envision him to be. Happy Father's Day to all, and may your sons & daughters never have to face the scrutiny & criticism of KOBE BRYANT.
