Seahawks spin Mora's role

When Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren missed two practices because of an undisclosed surgical procedure, offensive coordinator Gil Haskell took the reins, not secondary coach Jim Mora, who will become the head coach next season. That might be tied to the Seahawks' concerns regarding the perception that Mora is infringing on Holmgren's turf this year, Holmgren's 10th and final season.

Well might as well get him some practice, before he takes over next season

It's a crying shame the Seahawks got robbed in the Super Bowl. The NFL knew the Steelers would sell more merchandise. Holmgren should have got a second ring that year.

Mike has had a great career, but it sounds like his heart wasn't really into coming back this year. Maybe this is where he should just step aside and let Mora take over now.

June 15, 2008  10:25 AM ET

Not knowing the intricacies of the relationship between Mike and Jim, it's hard for me to opine about this tidbit. But all the same, I think Mora should be stepping in in Holmgren's absence.

thepatsriotscheated,

Seahawks got robbed?

Got any evidence to back that up crybaby?

So the refs made them 1) drop passes all over the field, 2) catch TD passes out of bounds, 3) push off on a defender in the end zone to make a catch, 4) strangle (then tackle) an admitted offsides Clark Haggans on a "holding" call, 5) throw a costly INT, 6) miss 2 field goals, 7) have Hasselbeck grossly mis-manage the play clock at the end of both halves - calling audibles that ate time off the clock and throwing 6 yard passes IN BOUNDS when he should have been going for the endzone, and 8) fail to remember that the Steelers (Randle El in particular) occasionally throws the ball out of the reverse?

You guys didn't get "robbed" .. your irrelevant team just flat-out sucks! Your stellar coach (who lost track of downs in a former Super Bowl and just LET the other team score) personally admitted they didn't play well enough to win.

But I'll be more than happy to go over every "bad" play you can list on this thread. And here's what's gonna happen ... I'll tear about 98% of them up and then give an example from above where a lack of execution cost them the game.

So just start posting those bad calls buddy, one at a time, and I'll take it from there.

June 15, 2008  12:37 PM ET

If thats the case why have him as the next coach if your not going to use him rignt now

June 15, 2008  01:10 PM ET

I don't like all these "head coaches in waiting". I know you need to plan for the future, but I don't think it's a good idea. There should be one head voice and no one else the players should have to worry about..

June 15, 2008  01:25 PM ET

BlackGold,

I'm not a Seahawks fan. I just know the NFL gave the Steelers that Super Bowl.

June 15, 2008  02:15 PM ET

Good teams can overcome a few bad calls. There weren't enough bad calls to completely change the game. The ones that did occur might have led to the Seahawks being less focused and caused them to make a few more of the mistakes they made. But again a good team would have been able to put them behind them and go out and win the game.

June 15, 2008  02:48 PM ET

How many back-up coaches does a team need, anyway.

June 15, 2008  03:18 PM ET

I love Pittsburgh fans and their continued denial of what everyone else in the universe sees as obvious... the Steelers got a gift in the Super Bowl. The holding penalty was a joke (Madden said if they call that then they need to call holding on every play in every game in the league), and the offensive pass interference was a joke too (as Madden said "that is not what you think of when you think of pass interference"). The Steelers got a gift for greater money return. Simple as that.

There were just enough bad calls to change the game. Those two call completely turned the game. One gave them a field goal instead of a touchdown (4 point turn). The other gave them a turnover instead of a touchdown (7 points and 14 if you include the fact that the Steelers scored a few minutes later thanks to the extra space given to them by the horrific low block penalty on Hasselbeck).

No team in NFL history has won a Super Bowl with less yards, less time of possession, and more turnovers than the opposition. Wonder how they did it?

June 15, 2008  04:33 PM ET

YES blackgold I wold love the hear you go over EVERY playin that game the refs did make terible calls in that game and that was not a pushoff in the endzone it's called going full speed and a good move! The game is over and enjoy your tanted win!

June 15, 2008  05:13 PM ET

How many times have we heard, one play can change a game? Well, the refs changed it alright. Pittsburgh is by far a more popular franchise than Seattle and there is a boatload of money to be made on Steeler merchandise. Yep, that Super Bowl was a gift.

Having said that, if you are Mike Holmgren, how do you keep the fire and passion to coach after being robbed like that?

Leagues want their most popular franchises to succeed for marketing purposes. NHL=Penguins/Red Wings, NBA=Lakers/Celtics, NFL=Steelers/Patriots, MLB=Yankees/Red Socks.

June 15, 2008  05:22 PM ET

lol you guys.

June 15, 2008  05:25 PM ET

GOING BACK to Mora, maybe Holmgren left it to the OC because its still Holmgren's team. There may be some things that Holmgren does not agree to with Mora. Therefore let someone you hired in a higher position run the team you want it to be run. It may be about infringing but IT IS still Holmgren's team.

June 15, 2008  09:03 PM ET

thepatriotscheated,

Why is it every time some idiot says the refs gave the Steelers the Super Bowl, they can NEVER name any more than one call at MOST? That's if they can even name any at all.

Either start naming the calls or ****!

see, It's real simple moron .. you either put up or shut up.

June 15, 2008  09:09 PM ET

Black Gold, you can tell from the person's name that they get stuck on things and that he doesn't no what he is talking about. I, even though I am a Patriots fan, agree with the Steelers' side. I also have never heard anyone who said that mention even one.

June 15, 2008  09:28 PM ET

It's funny how you Steeler fans are so sensitive about the gift Super Bowl.

Kinda the same about Patriot fans......with spygate and all.

June 15, 2008  09:38 PM ET

chokeit42,

No, it's called you being an idiot. Maybe you just spent too much time choking it when you should have been watching the play?

Of at least 25 to 30 people who were watching the game at the Super Bowl party I was at in Chicago, not ONE bitched about the calls. Not even a Cowboy fan who would have been the first to complain since the Steelers tied his team with 5 Super Bowl wins with the victory.

It definitely WAS a pushoff. It's not even debatable And the following apple quicktime download of the push off proves it:

put the "http://www." onto seas.upenn.edu/~dmstein/steelers/PushOff.mov

At 9 seconds in, pause the play and drag the slider slowly ... and here's what you'll see: Jackson's arm extend into Chris Hope and Chris Hope's body and both his feet get moved backwards - indicating he was pushed.

Feel free to watch it over and over again until it sinks in!

He DID push off ... he altered the DB???s position with the push ... it's on film. Now whether you think it was of consequence to the catch, or whether it SHOULD have been called, can be debated - but not whether or not he DID it.

If it was Chris Hope who pushed off like that to catch the ball (and intercept it), you would have been screaming "PASS INTERFERENCE!" on the Steelers and you know it.

By the way, after the piece of **** did that blatant push off, he had the nerve to tell the ref who was RIGHT THERE "I didn't touch him!"

Again, which is disputed by the video evidence above.

Looks like you're 0-1.

Do you have any other "bad call" that you need me to correct you on?

June 15, 2008  10:33 PM ET

Seattles comment - "The MORA the merrier" !!!

June 15, 2008  10:54 PM ET

alaskanite65,

"I love Pittsburgh fans and their continued denial of what everyone else in the universe sees as obvious..."

Try again.

Most people know that only people who either hate the Steelers to begin with or are blatant cryababy Seachicken homers think the game was fixed.

You're 0-1.

"The holding penalty was a joke (Madden said if they call that then they need to call holding on every play in every game in the league),"

Really?

First Locklear put his hands up in Haggan???s face, then he had his arm around Haggan's neck from the side, then he hooked Haggan???s right shoulder with his right arm and GRABBED a chunk of his jersey in the process of taking Haggans down in a last ditch effort to keep him from getting at Hasselbeck - which is the only reason Hasselbeck was able to get the throw off. (???)

NFL Rule Book: Hand(s) or arm(s) that encircle a defender???i.e., hook an opponent???are to be considered illegal and officials are to call a foul for holding.

You're 0-2.

Your ???holding occurs on every play??? statement is debatable .. but you know what DOESN'T happen on every play? Hooking, strangling, and tackling of a defensive lineman ... all on the SAME play!

They simply called it "holding" for lack of a better term ??? only because they didn't have a penalty for choking/clotheslining/tackling.

By the way, you want to go by what Madden said about it - a guy who cant even see his feet, let alone what happens on the football field half the time? Well, Lincoln Kennedy, an 11-year NFL veteran tackle and three-time Pro Bowl OFFENSIVE LINEMAN, said that the call was "Clearly holding".

People with a brain in their head will take Kennedy's word over Madden's any day. Apparently you're not one of them. And the reason is obvious.

You're now 0-3.

"and the offensive pass interference was a joke too (as Madden said "that is not what you think of when you think of pass interference")."

You know damn well that if it was Chris Hope that pushed off the same way that Jackson did, and Hope caught (intercepted) the ball, you can bet your **** that you would have screaming for DEFENSIVE pass interference on the play. Like I said above when I posted the video of the play, it definitely was a push off. Done right in front of the ref too. And the video proves it.

0-4!

"There were just enough bad calls to change the game."

Yet you still haven't named a "bad call" that I haven't torn to pieces! Don't 1) push off in the end zone to get separation or 2) hook a lineman's shoulder from the side and take him to the ground from the back to prevent him from getting past you .... and you might not get those penalties called!

I'll give you the "horrific low block penalty on Hasselbeck". But what happened right before that low block penalty was called Einstein?

Answer: HasselBLECH thew an INT.

If Hasslebeck hadn't thrown that **** interception in the first place, we wouldn't be talking about the bogus penalty on his block that he had to throw on the same play now would we? Which only proves yet AGAIN that for every bad call you point out, I can give you a legitimate example where a lack of execution cost the Seahawks the game.
