Market for Okafor might be limited

It's common knowledge around the NBA that the Bobcats previously offered Emeka Okafor more than $12 million a season to re-sign. The list of teams that could assemble anything approaching $12 million under the salary cap this summer is small. Plus, I'm not sure any team would choose to offer Okafor more than the Bobcats already have. Based on NBA documents I've seen, only three teams could make such an offer this summer -- Philadelphia, Washington and Memphis.

Maybe he's not looking to play for money as much as he's looking to play for a winning team. He's a really smart guy who probably realizes that if he just had a chance to win he be a lot happier.

miami sign him instead of marion draft beasley and get a point guard

When healthy he's not a bad player. Don't know that any team would offer him anything close to that considering he has a history of injuries, take the money Omeka and stay in Charlotte. LB may turn things around.

I want Okafor to say on the Bobcats more then anyone else on this team. He is the only potential all star and he is the only true face of the team. He didn't sign that deal with the Bobcats last offseason due to the coaching situation. He didn't want to be stuck on a team that has no chance to win, so he turned the deal down. I don't believe it was ever about money, like most NBA players are after which is ruining the game, but about a chance to be in the playoffs. This team will be better under Brown but will be even better if we can get rid of Wallace, and either get a true point guard to start and a true Center to help Okafor.

didn't he turn down the offer because he wanted an extension similar to the one Dwight Howard got?

if that's what he's looking for, then he's outta luck.

It seems that if you are 7 ft tall and can catch 7-8 rebounds a game, then you're entitled to 10-15 Million a year. This guy Okafor is extremely overrated.

June 16, 2008  09:17 AM ET

"He is the only potential all star "

- um NO....he is NOT an all-star-type player.
nice guy, good worker- but thats all

and
"It seems that if you are 7 ft tall and can catch 7-8 rebounds a game, then you're entitled to 10-15 Million a year."

Okafur is like 6-7.....that's his problem- he's a center trapped in a small forwards body.

Okafor is staying in Cha.
"This team will be better under Brown but will be even better if we can get rid of Wallace, and either get a true point guard to start and a true Center to help Okafor."
One outta 3 is terrible. Wallace is a solid player, no need to dump him. Felton is a solid PG, he does his job.
They had a decent C in Primo, but he didn't stay healthy.
If they can find someone to take Morrison & May, they'll be in the playoffs this year...

June 16, 2008  10:07 AM ET

He's not going anywhere. Who is going to offer him more money than Charlotte? No one.

June 16, 2008  10:25 AM ET

These idiot young stars and their big heads. Gordon turns down a big deal from Chicago. Okafor is stupid if he thinks anybody will pay him more then 12 million a year. He plays great defense but he doesn't have the offensive talent to justify getting that much money.

"Okafor is stupid if he thinks anybody will pay him more then 12 million a year"

- well, if Isiah was still running the knicks....then he'd have a shot.
- I wouldn't rule out Mamphis' GM either- not the sharpest knife in the drawer

June 16, 2008  10:31 AM ET

The Wizards should be all over him.

June 16, 2008  10:33 AM ET

Okafor is a smaller version of Camby. He is not a star, but provides rebounding and defense. Every team could use him, but he will never be a KG or Duncan.

June 16, 2008  10:35 AM ET

In this particular case, I don't think it's about the money. OKafor is looking for the opportunity to play for a winner, and the Bobcats don't appear to be improving.

June 16, 2008  10:49 AM ET

I agree- I don't see him a s a 'chase teh money guy'
if its offered- why NOT take it....
but he would be an excellent piece- say in Laker land- where they need a defender.
but NOT a place like Cleveland- where they need SHOOTERS

June 16, 2008  11:02 AM ET

LB will turn the Bobcats around, before J-Rich got here Gerald Wallace was our best player, Emeka is 6-10 not 6-7 - big difference when playing PF-C. We need to keep okafr or get some one just as good, but not in the draft- they need a center.

June 16, 2008  11:03 AM ET

The Sixers need a PF that can score and the Okafor/Dalembert combo actually works well for both guys. That being said, I wouldn't bet on Okafor leaving Charlotte, but we'll see, you never know with Larry Brown at the helm.
