Kansas junior guard Mario Chalmers will stay in this month's NBA draft, KU coach Bill Self announced in a statement Sunday. Chalmers will join junior Brandon Rush and sophomore Darrell Arthur as KU underclassmen expected to be picked in the first round. Chalmers, chosen the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four after tying the national championship game at Memphis with a three-pointer at the buzzer, will have his jersey retired at Kansas.

You are not even amongst the top 4 point guards in the draft this year.....
- you can't shoot- yeah I know you hit the lucky basket in the end-
- & you have no upside
at best you will be a late 1st rounder this year- probably a 2nd rounder

if you stay- you would AT MINIMUM- be in no worse shape....but likey would be able to be a lock as a 1st rounder next year

Selfishly - I would say enjoy your senior year and leave as a legend
but I can understand the allure of teh $

yes love the move IN YOUR FACE BILL

June 16, 2008  09:30 AM ET

Cant shoot? He made 46 percent of his 3-pointers last season. Shot over 50 percent from inside the arc. How can you be upset he is leaving? He gave us a National Title.

And, arsenal, calm down buddy. KU just hauled in the #2 recruiting class in the nation. It's pretty silly to say "In your face Bill." He just won a national title. We all knew Mario was gone little fella.

KU just reloads.

Tyrone Appleton, please step to the starting PG stand. Top juco PG in the nation.

brandon rush has been the posterchild of kansas basketball the past 3 years and now mario hits one big shot and gets his jersey retired? at kansas? that seems a little crazy in my mind

June 16, 2008  09:40 AM ET

I dont know where you live, or if you follow KU, but I live in Kansas and by no means has Brandon Rush ever been the poster child for KU. He has been an outstanding player but not the face of KU basketball. He would have went to the NBA last year if not for hurting his leg. Mario has been our best overall player the past 2 seasons. Ask any KU fan and they will tell you. And, just like at most colleges, if a kid is the MOP of the Final Four he gets his jersey retired. It's pretty simple.

"He made 46 percent of his 3-pointers last season. Shot over 50 percent from inside the arc. "

Lay-ups figure into 'inside the arc' (tony parker shoots 50% form field as well- and he is a horrible shooter)
I'm talking jump shooting
- and of course you are aware that the NBA 3 is further out-

I think he'll have a good NBA career as a back-up
& he's OBVIOUSLY a winner.....

I'm purely taking draft position- he'll get drafted- but if he doesn't go 1st round- he will not get the guaranteed $

June 16, 2008  11:43 AM ET

Yeah, but it is silly to say he isnt a good shooter. 46 percent from beyond the arc is pretty damn good. And, obviously you know that the 3 point line doesn't take lay ups into consideration. If a guy is knocking down almost 50 percent of his shots, 2 and 3 pointers, I think he's a fine shooter. He is terrific defensively. Very long arms. Very quick. He will be a fine NBA player. His stock will never be higher. This is coming from the biggest KU fan you will meet. Sure, I wish he had come back, but I cant blame him. He led us to the title.

If he doesnt get drafted, he made a mistake, but apparently a team like the Spurs made him a guarantee. I hope.

June 16, 2008  11:45 AM ET

I'm guessing he found someone that made him the guarantee he was looking for.

I understand the culture of basketball today, but I would like to see a player stay 4 years before having thier jersey retired. He did 3 which is really cool, but I'm just trying to look at the big picture. Retiring a jersey should be far and few between.

Is he flashing a gang sign?

June 16, 2008  12:36 PM ET

Good luck Super Mario. Definitely made the final a memorable one.

June 16, 2008  03:38 PM ET

Whoop tee fricking doo. Another college player who's not ready for the pros is wanting to be drafted.

June 16, 2008  04:23 PM ET

Are you guys all a bunch of babies cause Kansas Won THE TITLE... ROFLMAO.... what b*tches... Ha Ha in whoever wants to wine... heres some cheese...

June 16, 2008  08:00 PM ET

Enjoy it while you can, with UNC returning Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington and Danny Green instead of losing them to the draft you won't be hoisting anything but your own glass of whine next season!

He Dorothy, How is the cheese in Kansas?

Flashing gang-signs, Chalmers is?

June 17, 2008  05:30 AM ET

Chalmers is a class act. he has represented himself, his family and Kansas extemely well. He knows the game, plays great defense and is a TEAM player. Add the offense he has demonstrated and he will develop into a great NBA player.

Being drafted late in the first round isn't all bad. It means you go to a winning team vs a losing team. A winner need contribution, not distractions, and Mario will give them that.

June 17, 2008  12:40 PM ET

As I said-
good player, good defender......
will get drafted prob late 1st round
- he's basically Chris Duhon-
will have a decent NBA career as a back-up & spot defender

But for all of you who think he will be a 'great' NBA player- you are delusional

He has NO MORE upside, he's small and I still maintain that shooting open jumpers in college is VERY different that getting your shot off against BIGGER NBA players

Hey, it's a free country we live in where one heroic act can reap huge dividends. More power to him. No, he's not Kansas' greatest, but he divided the waters when it counted!
