Walz interested in Lightning job
Wes Walz may be venturing into a new career. Walz, the former Wild center who retired from the National Hockey League as a player in December, has been asked if he's interested in becoming an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning. The conversation took place three weeks ago and is expected to continue this week if the Lightning's ownership change is approved, as expected, Wednesday by the Board of Governors.

One of the best non-impact players in the game, why wouldn't you want him as an assistant? Why not just make him head coach?

Now I know relatively nothing about personnel in the NHL - and have wondered which papers and TV networks all you guys watch, because I truly am impressed with all the detailed knowledge you have of both the intricacies of the game and personnel - both on and off the ice. That being said, and returning to your comment above, as Exhibit A I would give you Bruce Boudreau. As with other sports, I don't think not being an impact performer should exclude you from having a good knowledge of tactics and how to handle players. Personally, I'm more than happy to have a guy who, by his own admission, was a hugely under-performing player as our new head coach.
But that's just me.....
