Vick's former coaches didn't know

Before former Falcons coach Dan Reeves maneuvered in 2001 to make Michael Vick the No. 1 pick overall in the NFL draft, he did what most of his peers would have done. That is, he called those in charge of the league's security staff to check for anything strange in Vick's past, dogfighting or otherwise. Nothing, the NFL told Reeves. Still, last week an unidentified police informant said Vick was present and betting heavily on dogfighting in 2000, when he played at Virginia Tech. "I spent a lot of time talking to [Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer], and he certainly didn't know anything about [Vick and dogfighting]," said Reeves.

I heard that they have enough evidence to arrest vick, so do it!

Dan R :Does Mike smoke that green grass?
Frank B :Nah, he's a good kid.
D R :Did he ever appear intoxicated?
F B : Not that I'm aware of.
D R :Does he like to show the ladies who's in charge,if you know what I mean?
F B :No way Dan,he's respectful to everyone.
D R :You've been a lot of help, thank you Frank. One more thing before I forget. He's not into that pit bull raising, and dogfighting non-sense sort of stuff is he?
F B : Uhh...Listen Dan,I gotta go,the ol' lady just beeped me which means she's at the hospital having an emergency C-section performed on her....uh...good luck with Mr.Vick, you won't be sorry!!!

for the n.o. saints sake, i hope vick remains the starting qb at atlanta

June 3, 2007  11:24 AM ET

still looking for all those Vick defenders to comment on this posting.... so here it is again...

"Let's cut to the chase here - for all you idiots who defend Vick...

if he's innocent,
why isn't he speaking out against dog-fighting?...
why isn't he holding a press conference saying that he is innocent and that he will co-operate with any investigation and hope to put an end to dog-fighting...
why isn't he donating some money to the Humane society and saying how dispicable and disgusting the sport of dog-fighting really is?
why is he hiding?
why is he not coming out in support of the investigation?
why did he lie and say he has never been to his property in Virginia?

what is wrong with you idiots who keep defending this loser?... I keep reading about Vick not been charged.... was Pac-Man charged?...

where there is smoke, usually there is fire...

Face it you Vick supporters.... the guy is a Thug and is going down...

The biggest thing to consider here is Vick's reaction to this....

His silence speaks volumes.... and shows his guilt quite clearly... how can anyone interpret Vicks reaction to these allegations any other way?"

June 3, 2007  11:26 AM ET

If they keep this up, the "Dirty Birds" will surpass the Raiders as the most thuggish NFL franchise.

Does anyone else find irony in the fact that Arthur Blank is down on the sidelines just about every gameday, watching and talking to his franchise QB, and yet he was completely unaware of all these shenanigans? I mean, there is no way you invest that kind of coin in a guy if you know one PR nightmare like this can tank his marketability like that. Just... funny is all.

This is starting to look like Kobe during the rape allegations. Star athlete, world in the palm of his hands, makes a dumb move, controversy drags out, endorsements start to get pulled... etc.

Amen Fonzie, well said...

June 3, 2007  12:13 PM ET

The thing that really bothers me about this whole situation is the fact that the NFL let it go on for as long as it did. Are you really gonna try and tell me, with all the steps the NFL takes to know what they're players are doing, that they didn't have prior knowledge of this going on? I don't buy that. Innocent until proven guilty, fine, but Mike Vick is scandalous, it's written all over his face and clear as day in his attitude.

June 3, 2007  12:34 PM ET

couldn't have said it better, fonzie

June 3, 2007  01:01 PM ET

wow duncanj. You say, "i hope people don't over look his talents because of a violent hobby". so if vick ran around killing people in his spare time, it would be ok? obviously thats not what hes doing (we hope), but to say that as long as someone is talented, they can do whatever they want, even if it is breaking the law? dogfighting is not only a sick, violent hobby, it also happens to be illegal in virginia, where vick lives. you have to be really shallow to only care that he entertains you, and not about what he is like as an actual person. besides, he isnt even very entertaining as a player. he dances around trying to run as much as possible, throws interceptions when he does throw, and fumbles way too much. michael vick is a failure in every way, but most of all as a person.

June 3, 2007  01:36 PM ET

I find it really hard to believe people care this much about this story. It's dog figting. What's the big deal?

People go to Mexico and Spain to bet on bullfights all the time. People eat veal. They wear makeup, deoderants, and shampoos tested on animals. Animal cruelty is the basis of our food industry. And people care about this?

And the ironic thing it that all of these dog are now going to be put down. Guess thaat have to kill the dogs to save them.

June 3, 2007  04:08 PM ET

Its interesting to see how people love you when you're up, and then crucify you when you're down. Michael Vick is finding out that he is not much different than most stars. That is he's one allegation away from falling out of the public's graces.

Michael has character flaws (who among us doesn't) no question. As a player, he has flaws, (what player doesn't. On this issue though, I'm curious as to why he hasn't been charged yet, brought in for questioning, nothing? Also, all the so called "friends" who have leaked information, if what they had to say was credible, wouldn't the prosecution have already indicted Vick on what they had to say? To me, nothing that has been brought forward is enough to indict, let alone convict, so I leave it at that ...

As far as Vick not saying anything, his lawyers (rightfully so) have instructed him to keep quiet, because its in his best interests to do so. He doesn't need to say anything, nothing that has been brought forward so far is credible, he'll speak in due time. To me, until they indict him, or question him, or do something other than interview questionable people (whose comments they then discount) he's innocent.

June 3, 2007  04:36 PM ET

well spoken fonzie. you always were the coolest!!!

June 3, 2007  05:10 PM ET

If he's innocent, why should he donate money to the humane society?

Animal testing of drugs has a social benefit. What is the social benefit of dog fighting?

Innocent until proven guilty is for courts of law. One FACT is that Vick hangs out with criminals and has engaged in conduct harmful to the league. Other leagues suspend players for that. The NFL shoulf too.

June 3, 2007  05:18 PM ET

IM SURE THE NFL KNEW VICK LIKE IVERSON SPELLED 'T.R.O.U.B.L.E.. BUT TURNED A BLIND EYE BECAUSE THEY KNEW HE LIKE IVERSIN COULD BRING IN $$$$. NOW, IF HES FOUND GUILTY THERE WILL BE A MUCH BIGGER INVESTIGATION AT THE COLLEGE LEVEL.....LIKE HOW DID A COLLEGE KID COME UP WITH THE MONEY TO BET HEAVY ON DOGS...WAS IT A BOOSTER OR DID A CERTAIN NFL TEAM OR AGENT ADVANCE HIM MONEY. IF VICK WAS A MAN HE WOULD FESS UP BUT I SEE HES NOTHING BUT A EAST END THUG

June 3, 2007  05:32 PM ET

As I read through these comments, it is amazing how individuals who are Wal-Mart greeters, basket weavers, and dirt testers, sit on their computer stools with ESPN on the TV slay a man who hasn't been found guilty of anything. Popular opinion and the justice often times seem light years away. JUSTICE says innocent until proven guily...Popular opinion says, "It was on TV, so it has to be right." Lots of people would most likely sleep a whole lot better if they let law people and involved folks handle legal business. An opinion is one thing, but slaying and slandering an individual...well that's against the law.

June 3, 2007  05:53 PM ET

Well said DOG. Not to mention if he was still going to Va Tech during this, police informants, so called betting on dog fight crap, where did he get the "big ballin" money? He wasn't even signed yet.

June 3, 2007  06:04 PM ET

I'm sure It's all just one big misunderstanding. He couldn't of done it.But it sure sounds real bad.

June 3, 2007  06:04 PM ET

Oh wait I just opened my eyes hes guilty as sin!!!

June 3, 2007  07:01 PM ET

Arrest the whole Vick family. They are a menis to society and think they are above the law. Mike Vick is some punk who deserves to be punished. He is overrated. I say put him in a room with some mean dogs and let them attach him. He is probably too stupid to realize what would be happening anyway.
