Red Wings defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom would love to see Mats Sundin in Detroit. But Henrik Zetterberg told the Toronto Sun: "My gut says he'll be back with the Leafs."

The Red Wings won't need him. They should be the favorites to repeat as Stanley Cup Champs again this year.

June 16, 2008  08:10 AM ET

It's too bad. I'm just hoping he goes somewhere else, anywhere. Just want to see some kind of different product coming out of Toronto. As for needing him patscheated, they didn't this year but you never know about next year. You know if they could get him cheap enough they'd welcome him in a heartbeat. They'd be foolish not to really. No matter how much you might dislike him, he has carried a crappy Leafs team for years (yes they didn't get any where) but he was the only consistent member of that team. With a better coach, system and talent like the wings have he could help. A second line with him, Franzen and whoever would be pretty hard to keep off the scoreboard.

Well according to Canadian broadcast station TSN, Zetterberg is pretty much the Lord Jesus Christ now. So, naturally, his word is the gospel.

June 16, 2008  08:33 AM ET

He's coming to Montreal, enough with the speculation already.

June 16, 2008  08:37 AM ET

We don't want him in Toronto... its over Mats... move on...

why don't you take your 1 goal in last 20 games kind of production elsewhere... oh, I forgot... nowhere else would a city still talk about you like a hero with stats like that...

June 16, 2008  08:56 AM ET

Fonzie, are you really ripping on a guy who has been loyal to your underachieving team? Seems a little bit short on class.

I think Henrik knows what most know, this guy's heart is in Toronto.

June 16, 2008  09:04 AM ET

He will be back with the Leafs..

June 16, 2008  09:25 AM ET

I still think he's going to be the new singer in Midnight Oil

BETTMAN S***S

June 16, 2008  09:43 AM ET

Jagr also won't be going to the Wings. Just throwing that out there.

June 16, 2008  09:45 AM ET

That picture of Sundin would go good with some cheesy techno music.

Yeah I think you're pretty much right on that one OtherOne...hahahaha

Fonzie....this guy could have moved numerous times in his career. He stayed on and was loyal to the Leafs in all the bad times.....that comment shows very little class

June 16, 2008  10:20 AM ET

This is getting to be as painfully boring as Forsbergs legendary come backs!

June 16, 2008  10:43 AM ET

As a Leaf fan, I do not have any resentment toward Mats. But it is time to move on. It just doesn't make sense to keep Mats at 7-9 million year when the team is in full rebuilding mode. They don't have to sell tickets either, the place is always full.

Spend the 8-9 million on two or three other quality players and increase depth and get younger should be the plan. They are 2-3 years away from looking beyond any other success after rebuilding anyway.

June 16, 2008  10:48 AM ET

Coming back to the Leafs, Huge fan of the Leafs hopefull he is returning, I think one more run to the playoffs and the Cup and he will be done after this year

June 16, 2008  11:35 AM ET

Detroit shouldn't sign him. They need to keep the lines exactly how they were last season.

June 16, 2008  12:11 PM ET

he's better off playing in sweden than going back to the leafs

June 16, 2008  01:20 PM ET

Mats has been loyal to a fault. He did himself in at the TD when he refused to wave his no-trade. If he wants to stay, then stay.
Another option is to retire. He has been quoted as saying that he won't get married until he's ready to retire. He got engaged not too long ago. Maybe this is his next move???

June 16, 2008  01:41 PM ET

I know it's a risky prediction, but I also think that Kobe Bryant will not become a Red Wings soon either.

June 16, 2008  01:43 PM ET

No one loves this team more then me but Mats loyalty may be his problem. You have to admire a man that will stay with his team year after losing year without a prayer of getting his name on the cup. I heard the same thing torgue1 said Mats was pretty clear he wouldnt get married until he retired he wanted to stay focused on one thing at a time. I think the Leafs ought to write a check as big as he wants to stay. If they are going to rebuild they will need his leadership to pull it off.
Go Leafs Go.

Clark,

I have to respectfully disagree. 8 million can be better spent elsewhere. Rebuilding teams don't need players soaking up that much cap room. Mats is welcome to leave, and won't have the complaints of many fans because of his loyalty. Everyone has to say goodbye... Gretzky left Edmonton, Bourque left Boston, noone blamed them. If Sundin leaves now and the Leafs start their massive rebuilding project, so be it. And anyone delusional enough to think the Leafs will be better this year than last or the last three... exactly how? They are riddled with unproductive players (White, Ponikarovsky, Wellwood, Bell, Raycroft, Moore, etc..) that Wilson and Fletcher have to deal with, and there are no blue-chip can't miss kids coming up as of now, so the pickings are slim. Free agency isn't a slam dunk, nor easy in the cap universe. So, let's all of us Leaf fans take a long, sober look at this team, cut our losses and start over.
