Agent: Sakic decision on hold

Joe Sakic still is thinking it over. Sakic, the Avalanche's longtime captain who will turn 39 next month, still has not made up his mind whether to return for a 20th NHL season, his Winnipeg, Manitoba-based agent Don Baizley said Monday. "Joe has not told me of any decision yet, and I assume that means he hasn't told the team anything yet," Baizley said. The wait is turning into an anxious one for the Avs and their fans. The team would like to know Sakic's decision as soon as possible, with the NHL draft and the free-agency period both happening within two weeks. Baizley said there have not been contract talks with the Avalanche. He also said he does not know the intentions of Peter Forsberg, whom he also represents.

There is no "news" in this story at all!

Oh good, a new version of the Peter Forsberg watch. Yawn.

June 17, 2008  09:20 AM ET

Even as a Wings fan, I've always like Joe, but until he makes a decision this is going to be another Forsberg like news story. List will go on .."will he stay", "will he retire", "will he take a crap...film at 11"

He should come back for one more season at least.

Only if he can handle it, maybe

June 17, 2008  10:01 AM ET

Spiny Norman, he can handle it. Don't worry about that. And rest assured everybody. There will be a decision by July 1. He has told Francois Giguere that he will definitely make a decision before free agency.

Take your time, Joe! We aren't going anywhere!

I hope so. I always liked the guy as a player. As a Ranger fan, I've seen too many guys play past when they should have though!

June 17, 2008  12:03 PM ET

That's definitely understandable. The Rangers have kinda had a bad habit of bringing in guys that should be in wheelchairs. Super Joe wouldn't play if he thought that was gonna be the case. Adrian Dater of the Denver Post, the same guy that wrote this story, wrote last week that Sakic is still working out the same way he has every offseason. If he plays, he'll be in as good of shape as ever.

Sakic is a great hockey player and sure fire Hall of Famer. However, I believe it is time for him to hang them up and for the Aves to start building for the future.

June 17, 2008  12:42 PM ET

DMitch... Point well-taken. However, the Avs have started building for the future with guys like Stastny, Wolski. Svatos, Hensick, Jones, Finger, Cumiskey, McCormick, McCleod, and Guite. The reason that I would argue that it isn't time for Sakic to hang em up from purely a hockey standpoint is that 2 years ago, he put up 100 points. This past season, even with the hernia which caused him to miss 38 games, he still put up 41 points, and that includes about a 10-game conditioning period after returning from the surgery. While the injury certainly raises a lot of questions, I would argue that he can still play. He had never missed significant time in his career. Give it a go this fall, and if injuries arise, then yes, it is time to hang 'em up. Again, this is purely from a hockey standpoint. Of course it all depends on family and things as well.

It's time for a team to take a stand against the players who think in their own little world that they are more important than they really are. The Avs need to dump him and move on.

June 17, 2008  01:05 PM ET

Sakic needs to make a decision soon. Players owe that to their teams, it could affect the entire draft and it definitely changes the free agent situation. Sakic has been great for 20 years, so I think it might be time for him to hang them up. I don't see the Avs challenging for the cup. I don't think Sakic can change his game, like Yzerman did in Detroit, to stick around in a more defensive/checking role. The Avs need to get their young players into 1st and 2nd line action now and Sakic would occupy a center spot on one of those two lines if he comes back. Forsberg needs to retire. I love his game, but his game has taken its toll on his body. I don't think he'd be much use to MoDo of the SEL, either.

Plays for the Avs, Harry Connick Jr. does?
