Leafs draft depends on others

Amateur scouting director Dave Morrison will run the Maple Leafs' draft table this weekend, but his actions depend largely on teams such as Los Angeles, Atlanta and St. Louis. In a nutshell, if any of the five clubs picking between No. 1 Tampa Bay and the No. 7 Toronto takes top-ranked European forward Nikita Filatov, then the Leafs would get one of five highly rated North American defencemen, projected to go behind top choice Steve Stamkos (Tampa Bay).

It would be nice to see Toronto become relevent again.

You can't miss with any of the top ten picks this year. If Luke Schenn falls to the Leafs at 7, I'm going to be very pleased.

They should be assured of picking up a good D prospect. I like Schenn too Melvil...I would also hope that the Leafs will go for someone for that position as they have to deal with their blue line and it's contracts and NTCs. The Leafs need to add a couple of Yoots.

Year 1 of the rebuilding phase.

No shet Sherlock...I'm personally grateful you woke up extra early to share that "gem" with us.

Maybe there's a light at the end of the tunnel for the Leafs?

Nah! Rick Piddie and the baboons are still in charge!

Its amazing what the future looks like when you don't deal away your first-round picks for mediocre goaltending!

The Leafs will have a great prospect no matter who is left at No.7. If Schenn is gone, Mikkel Boedker should be available. I watched him in Kitchener this year and he's got wicked potential.

Shenn has got some great talent. He'd be the best pickup for the Leafs. That is if someone doesn't grab him up before they pick

Well, the Toronto Sun is now master of the obvious. All drafts depend on what happens with the teams that are able to pick ahead of you... The Leafs can anyone that can step in right away to help their cause for relevancy. A big defenseman or a quick scoring winger will definitely help right away.

Sorry: *the leafs can USE anyone that can step...

I am probably in the minority here, but I'd like to see them pick a forward like Filatov or Cody Hodgson. Good or bad, they're loaded with expensive d-men who I would think are hard to move, mostly because no one else hired JFJ

If they have to rely on Poni, Devereaux and Moore for secondary scoring, then I might as well get a Tavares 09 jersey right now

June 17, 2008  04:05 PM ET

That's a good point pstrelevance. I think they can't go wrong going with the "best player available" route , which is why I think if Schenn falls to 7 they have to grab him. In any case that won't happen, and the d-men may be thinned out when it gets to their pick - then I'm with you, take a Hodgson or a Filatov(if he's there).

That Beach kid looks like a fiery one, but I think he's one of those high risk hit or miss guys.

I think you're right...if they miss out on Schenn..Hodgson would be the best grab.
Beach to me looks more miss than hit..depends on some stern coaching and Beach's buying into whatever system is presented...if he's adaptable he'll be good..otherwise splat
