Agent: Yao not cleared to play

Rockets center Yao Ming moved a step closer to returning to the court with a good report from Monday's checkup, but is a long way from being cleared to play, Yao's agent John Huizinga said. Though there were reports out of China that Yao has been cleared and will play in the Stankovic Cup, Huizinga said that doctors have not cleared Yao for full practices and game action, and that it is premature to say whether he will play in that pre-Olympic event in Hangzhou, China, July 17-20.

when will he be ever cleared to play

June 17, 2008  10:32 AM ET

If he plays- it is a DISGRACE

I can understand playing in the actual olympics in 2months (since his country is hosting)
But NOW?

I thinkt his is the beginning of the end for Yao. He feels a sense a obligation to play, and he is ultimately going to do more damage to his NBA career.

big men who start having foot issues can't last long-
or at least can't play at a high level consistently fo rtoo long-

look at big Z in cleveland-
he had years where he was out-
and now can only play limited minutes

June 17, 2008  01:25 PM ET

z only plays limited minutes because he doesnt fit mike brown's offense, whatever that is. he has complained several times that he's not involved enough.

that being said, every year i still wait for yao to turn into the franchise player people expected him to be. and every year he and t-mac take turns sitting out dozens of games at a time. someone please get this modern-day bill walton a big 3 to play with.

YAo is a franchise player when he plays he averages 20 and 10 but he has to stay healthy.

[Hllywd] "He feels a sense a obligation to play, and he is ultimately going to do more damage to his NBA career."

I totally agree. His #1 priority should be to the team that is paying is salary. Forget this measly tournament; it's not even the olympics. Even then, it sucks that communist China "owns" Yao.

I can understand an olympic gold medal, but this success in this mid-summer tournament will mean nothing compared to an NBA Championship. I also doubt that China will win the gold medal, so he'll leave the olympics with more possible injuries and no medal.

It will be hard to win if he is not healthy. Poor Rocket's fans...it's all about injuries. (Yao, T-Mac, Alston...even Battier had surgery).

There is still reason to hope though...most everyone is looking at other teams being the premier winners. With a healthy squad, the Rockets could fly under the radar and do some real damage.

Actually he has been playing roughly 30 minutes a game since 2002-3.....long before mike brown was coach-

I do agree with the latter part of your statement though......lol

Yao should rest for the season. I don't think he's fully recovered from that foot injury. I bet that if he plays for China this summer, there's a good chance he'll get injured again when the season comes around.
