At the same time wideout Michael Floyd was checking into his dormitory at Notre Dame last weekend, former Irish quarterback Joe Montana was checking on his 6-foot-5 son Nate, who will be a freshman walk-on quarterback. Montana also has two daughters already at Notre Dame.

What a dumb comment local boy.

He's a WALK ON! No matter who his dad is, Nate can only hope to get some playing time. JC will be a better QB this year, & Dayne Crist is already next in line. Nate will have to do what his dad did, wait for his number to get called.

June 17, 2008  08:27 AM ET

It no matter who he be, it matter who he is and who it will be ...regardless who the Coach be. Dont no body get to say no nothing.

June 17, 2008  08:43 AM ET

Nate didn't receive any scholarship offers so this makes sense. I wish him the best and hope he becomes a better player and sees some playing time even though I HATE ND!

June 17, 2008  09:42 AM ET

As a 49er fan, I can only hope that young Nate gets his chance to fulfill his dream of playing @ ND. The lad has some big shoes to fill, and if he's patient, he will get his chance. The niners could use a Montana @ QB in the near future.

In a related story, Rudy Ruettiger's son Felix will be walking on at the South Bend Institute of Railroad Technology

June 17, 2008  10:05 AM ET

He just wants to follow in his Dad's footsteps. Nothing wrong with him walking the sidelines for the next 4 years and possibly getting a glorified mop-up snap when he's a senior.

Awwww this story is sooo sweet...someone stab be

June 17, 2008  10:11 AM ET

Take it from the TRUTH, you will want to ingest some heavy doses of amphetimines to stay awake for this one!

June 17, 2008  10:23 AM ET

He is a long shot at best. Probably be a backup throughout his time there.

June 17, 2008  10:38 AM ET

If he's good enough to walk on he must be decent.

Rudy! Rudy!

June 17, 2008  11:01 AM ET

I'm just pissed that he didn't take the number 3. Floyd's wearing it. The number 3 would be perfect.

THE TRUTH

Man, you seem bitter these days. This story has legs, no matter who you root for. Montana was a surprise in college, then a surprise in the pros. This kid, who seems to have more physical advantages, at least for the QB position, than dad, comes in as a walk-on. You can see it now: Clausen goes down with injury, the others are ineffectual and in comes Nate Montana. Remember, Montana's gift was really limited to just winning.

Yeah, it's sappy, but a lot of good stories are. And for some reason a lot of them are connected to ND.

And remember folks: sports **is** entertainment.

he has feet so we good enough to walk on , he good enough to sit and wait and he good enough to be waiting for him turns

Are you writing a freakin' "After School Special"?

"...Never give up on your DREAMS Nate..."

These days, if you're good, you'll get offers. And seriously, you don't think any schools were willing to take a look at Joe Montana's kid? If he was even a LITTLE BIT talented, he would have had MANY offers!

June 17, 2008  11:44 AM ET

For those of you too young to remember, the only reason his father ever saw the field at Notre Dame was because the two QBs ahead of him (Rusty Lisch and Gary Forystek) were both hurt in the Purdue game. If Coach Dan Devine had another QB available Joe would have still been picking up splinters (supposedly Devine was no fan of Montana). The result was a comeback victory against Purdue and a string of victories leading to thre National Championship. We have nothing if we don't dare to dream...

June 17, 2008  11:45 AM ET

George:

I AM bitter, because despite the fact that Notre Dame has been about at competitive as Diana Patric in the last decade, there are still stories trying to reinvent their tradition. RIP Token Catholic School Football team with a stereopye mascot!

June 17, 2008  11:57 AM ET

Gariboy, this isn't the 70's. Recruiters look under every rock they can find searching for talent. The story about some kid out on his daddy's farm in Bug Tussle, Idaho throwing 70 yard ropes and just WAITING to be discovered doesn't exist any more.

We live in the Information Age, and this kid has had a stage and a spotlight waiting for him since the first time he laced up cleats. If he was any good, they would already be naming streets after him in South Bend.

June 17, 2008  12:13 PM ET

I is the man

You truly make no sense!

June 17, 2008  12:15 PM ET

I bet if Dan Devine put in Rudy earlier he would have went pro! He had all the tools to be great. Rudy would have won the Heisman easliy.

June 17, 2008  12:16 PM ET

eyes... I am not saying he will ever see the field. I am just saying "kudos" to Notre Dame for showing respect to someone that added so much to their program's legacy. People like The Truth (see above comment) will never understand that. (Now I will wait for his next sarcastic comment)...
